OAKPAW WAS THE FIRST TO NOTICE the setting sun. Meanwhile, everyone was murmuring their congratulations in the bloody clearing. Yes, Sweetstar’s kits are a great addition to the Clan, but it will all just be a distant memory if something got to the kits. They were a while away from their camp, and they were vulnerable to all the predators that lurked around at night.
If only they knew.
The sun was almost setting in the sky, sending all of its rays making the pinkish color in the clearing. They were all still too oblivious.
OAKLEAF FOUND HIMSELF IN A STARRY clearing, where he had no idea where he had no recognition of. He had these dreams before, but he never knew what they meant. But, as he walked, a faint but familiar scent hit the roof of his mouth. That was when a blue-gray tom walked up to him.
“Oakpaw, I have come from StarClan to tell you of your special power.”
Oakpaw opened his mouth to speak, for that this was a dream, and nobody will know the horrible secret in a dream. “What special power?”
“Your gift is speed,” Cobaltpelt mewed, “specially chosen by your StarClan ancestors.”...
OAKPAW RAN AS FAST AS HE could, but the fox seemed faster.
StarClan, help me!
The trees were blurry around him, like they had always been, but he still seemed slow, in his eyes. He wished that he knew the answers. Ever since he saw that blue-gray tom a moon ago, he had been having these weird visions. He didn’t know where they came from.
Oakpaw came right to a stream, where he was at a dead end.
The fox was hissing with pleasure, as he had found a way to make his kill.
SWEETSTAR SAW NOTHING BUT DARKNESS IN her dream. She felt frightened, but she tried to stay calm. Where am I?
It was a half moon after Sweetstar appointed Oakpaw an apprentice. Where was Nightheart when she needed him? She then remembered that one night she let Nightheart in her den, three days after they found Cobaltpelt’s body.
“Nightheart,” Sweetstar had said, “I have never felt so depressed.”
“It’s all right,” Nightheart had mewed. “You still have me. I love you.”
I CAN’T BELIEVE MY OWN MOTHER lied to me! Three moons had passed since Oakkit was born, and he had just received the most devastating news of his life.
“We didn’t plan this, Oakkit,” Jadestem pressed. “It just happened.”
“Oh,” Oakkit snapped, “it just happened! That means I just happened!”
Jadestem looked at her son, hurt in her eyes. “I’m sorry, Oakkit. I’m so sorry. I had to tell you, in case you would notice anything strange about the way Raveneye looks at you; or any of the other WindClan cats.”
I hate you! Oakkit screamed in his head. I will never speak to you again!...
A WHITE SHE-CAT WALKED THROUGH THE forest, one chilly leaf-fall morning. Here green eyes were filled with worry. She then turned to face a red-brown tom, who held her up as she weakly staggered. The tom held a scrap of fur, a new-born kit, by its scruff. The she-cat’s name was Jadestem, and she had a dark secret.
“What are we going to tell my Clan?” Jadestem sighed with exhaustion.
The tom pressed against her, putting down the kit. “I don’t know,” he replied.
“What would they think,” she replied, “if they see you taking me into the camp, Raveneye?” ...
Oakpaw is gifted with an extraordinary power from StarClan. He has incredible speed, but he doesn’t know what it’s for. He refuses to speak because of it, or is it for something else?... But when Lilykit, the Clan leader’s daughter, can predict the future, it’s up to them to find out what greatness they are to the Clan. …
