If you really were so intent on having the characters just as though they were in the books, you would know that Damon would never do that to Elena in either the books, or the television show. Damon is still a person, deep down, and if his reactions are confident enough for you, then perhaps you should find a more vapid series to look into. I can suggest quite a few - believe me, I do this all the time, and I've read quite a few books where all the characters are are cocky, ridiculous characters with no humility. TV Damon is just as good as, if not better than, Damon's book counterpart. Saying that he lacks substance is an insult to the actor, and he works hard for his job. If you think that their relationship doesn't need any emotional depth, then you can't say you are a Delena fan. You can't say you're an Elena fan. You can't say you are a Damon fan. You can't even say you're a The Vampire Diaries fan. If you were, you'd be grateful that the writers put so much into trying to make us all happy every week, and you'd be happy with what they give you. You don't get Delena, and you never will, it seems.
