The Vampire Diaries Spoilers: Kai and Elena's "New Situation" 

The Vampire Diaries picks back up in January, we will find out what Kai (Christopher Wood) has in mind for prisoner Elena (Nina Dobrev). In the mean time, we have to speculate about why Kai went after the vampire lady — with a little help from spoilers, of course! What clues does TVLine have to give us?

TVD executive producer Caroline Dries explained that the title for the Jan. 22 episode — “Woke Up With a Monster” — is directly related to Elena and Kai’s new situation. What does that mean? Well, Kai won’t be giving up Elena until he has used her to reach his goal: merging with Jo and becoming the leader of the Gemini coven. Yikes!

How might Elena help Kai in his plan? Well, our money is on her doppelganger blood, but maybe that plot device is over? Other possibilities involve using Elena as a hostage to get her loved ones to help Kai reach his goal. We’ve been thinking about Elena’s kidnapping in relation to Damon, but what about Alaric? He and Elena are basically family. Who knows what lengths he would go to to save her, including agreeing Jo to turn herself over. Jo has also become a mentor of sorts for Elena in the last few months. Will she be willing to go up against such a powerful Kai if it means saving Elena’s life?

Whatever happens, the TVDers are not going to sit idly by while Kai has Elena. Caroline told The Hollywood Reporter: “It becomes an all-hands on deck situation, for sure. The people who find out about it, definitely, call to arms. And so the question becomes, how do we free Elena from basically the most powerful creature in Mystic Falls, and probably the world … minus, you know, the Originals in New Orleans.”
