I had the same stand with the whole Otis situation and I don't see this any different. Rick is a sanctimonious moron who acts with different weights and measures. It's not like Rick sneaked up on him and killed him in cold blood (you know, the way that Shane killed Otis and Randall). Shane was a murderer who showed no remorse and took no responsibility for his actions. He was a threat to the entire group and despite that, they gave him every opportunity to change and control himself. It really irks me that people are blaming Rick for this, especially when earlier in the same episode, Rick was gunning for Shane and trying to convince Hershel that Shane was different and was trying to be better. Killing Shane was the last thing he wanted to do, but Shane left him no choice. I don't think killing someone is ever the right thing to do, but in that case, it was absolutely necessary to the survival of the group. Rick did what Shane was always claiming he was best at - he did what he had to do to protect the ones he loved, even though it completely gutted him.
