Torchwood Question

Help...I'm new to the series and I can't understand something.

It might be silly... but when I was watching part of the show online the episode said doctor who. I later figured out that doctor who is a spin off. I wanted to get torchwood but do I I have to get doctor who too? I think it was the episode when Jack came back or left or both. I forgot now but it was an important part of the story I was watching at the time. Sorry I know it sounds like a really stupid question. Props will be given to anyone who can give me this info.

Hi! Actually, Torchwood is a spin off of Doctor Who. Doctor Who with the ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) was named Torchwood as an acronym for Doctor Who to keep the new Doctor Who series secret. Later, Doctor Who was sucsessful include with Captain Jack Harkness (Empty Child, The Doctor Dance), Russell T Davies decide a spin off with the caracter of Captain Jack Harkness. Since that time Torchwood and Doctor Who met each other. I recommand strongly to watch all series of Doctor Who first. You would understand easely. Captain Jack appears in some episodes of Doctor Who or is mentioned. Also the Doctor is mentioned in Torchwood but never appears, till now. Have fun with watching the Doctor!

Actually it's the other way around - Torchwood is a spin-off from Doctor Who.

You can watch one series without watching the other and still understand it. But I'd still recommend you watch a few episodes of Dr Who too, just to see if you like it.
