Chapter Five
Reese invited her inside and they got to work on Reese's couch. Her mom was currently cooking them oysters for dinner which was Dakota's favorite. Reese really wanted Dakota to like her. It was so obvious. "Our project is on Recyclable Art. Do you have old newspapers or something?" Dakota asked. She flipped open her binder and read the list. "We can use paper, soda cans, and everyday household items like paperclips and bottle caps. Things like that."
"My Uncle Kenny use to be a hoarder and he is always giving away his junk so he might have some useful things," replied Reese.
"Good."
"You gotta come see this Reese!" yelled her brother Jonathan. Then came laughing from the Kingston's dining room. "Hurry!" Reese rolled her hazel colored eyes and marched to the dining room across the hall.
Dakota took this as an opportunity to find some information on Reese. She strolled into the kitchen to find her mom humming christmas songs. "Excuse me Mrs. Kingston but I need to ask you something."
"Oh dear, you scared me. Would you like soda with your oysters or tea?" Mrs. Kingston asked. She pulled out four different bottles of soda.
"Water would be fine," Dakota answered. "Mrs. Kingston do you know if Reese and Abigail Dalton have ever been friends?"
"Never," she said. "Abigail was very wicked to my sweet pie or at least that is what Reese told me and I believe whatever my little Reese piece tells me. She needs someone to lean on ever since we discovered that disorder."
"What disorder?" Dakota questioned.
"She didn't tell you about her eating disorder?"
"Oh that disorder," Dakota said. She had no clue about the disorder. She only pretend to know to get more information. "I keep forgetting."
"Who knew you could already have a best friend in a few short days." Mrs. Kingston smiled a toothy grin and went back to her oven. Dakota couldn't help but think that the Kingston family were ugly people. Their daughter looked okay but she sure wasn't as hot as Dakota and Hazel. Matter of fact Dakota thought she was cuter then all three of them.
"Settle down, settle down," mumbled an exasperated Mr. Bulks. "Please be seated." Everyone rushed to their desk. Dakota took her sweet time. They could wait on her. She was much more prettier then them all. When you were that gorgeous, everyone would do anything for you. "Can you hurry up Ms. Sterling."
Dakota had his weird vibe in her stomach. It felt strange yet pleasant with a mixture of evil. She shrugged it off and returned to her desk. She gave a quick glance towards Hazel and she was having the same feeling too. Dakota couldn't help but think it had something to do with Abby. Reese was unaffected.
"I have some good news today." Mr. Bulk sat up in his chair. "Tomorrow we will he going to Georgia Coastal Region Campgrounds for the hiking trip. The school board thought that if students spent more time then obesity rates would go down and more children will be healthy and blah, blah, blah. I want all of you Juniors packed and ready to go. The Daltons will be accompanying us. They are still mourning the lost of their daughter so do not bring the conversation up. Also we will be leaving at 8:30 am and the trip is free so you can go home and tell your millionaire parents that they don't have to waste a penny sending you to camp."
Reese, Dakota, and Hazel all had the same thought at the same time. They thought they were way to pretty for this. It was only for the hideous because they had to be able to do something. In each girl something was stirring. They didn't notice the Abigail like qualities they were receiving. They didn't even feel odd.
"This trip will be worth half of your grade so do not go missing or get in to any kind of trouble. There will he no search party for you if you happen to get lost," he said while writing the EQ up on he SmartBoard. "During this hiking trip we will have various activities for you to do. Today I must prepare you for the wild world out there so our EQ for today is How Do I Survive In The Jungle? One way to survive is to always have a canteen of water and a compass. Those are your two necessities."
When first period was finally over, Hazel was barely out the door when Connor stood there waiting for her. His class was on the other side of school and yet he made it to walk her to her next class. "So have you though about it?" He asked. Dakota and Reese were already gone so Hazel would not have to deal with them.
"Yeah," She said nodding her head. "I will be your girlfriend." He screamed out a ear piercing yes and passionately kissed her on the lips.
"God, I wanted you say that since Freshmen year." He took the books that she was carrying out of her hands and into his.
A bit of jealousy arose in Hazel. She had no clue where it came from. It was just there. "Then why did you go out with Abigail and then secretly date me. I liked you a lot but all you did was shrug it of and say we would have to wait until it was over between you and her." Hazel was sick of having to be a guy's second choice. It was always because of Abby. Hazel couldn't have anyone.
He kissed once more but to simply shut her up. It worked. "I am so sorry," he apologized. "But it was like I was under the influence of Abby besides I was not all that in love with her."
"Hmm,"
"I know how I can make it up to you," he said eagerly. "We never got finished talking about what I found out about Abby's killer! That should cheer your spirits."
"It doesn't," she replied bitterly. "What I want to know is who dug up Abby's grave. We were there that night but it was not us. We should have seen someone lurking around probably waiting for us to go."
"I saw no one," Connor muttered. "Can we stop talking about Abby? It is really depressing." Hazel shrugged as they continued their journey to Health class.
"You brought it up," she uttered.
Once again after school Dakota had to do some detective work. All she got out of Reese's mom last night was that Reese had anorexia. That was basically it. She then realized how Abigail was always showing off her hot body in front of Reese which probably made her jealous. Reese could have been so furious with Abby and her perfect looks that she killed her. This story seemed likely but first she needed pictures. She went to the rehab center in Brunswick. The lady at the front desk looked up from her computer and said in a raspy voice, "May I help you?"
"Um, yes. Where can I find Reese Kingston? I needed to get her something that she needs for her appointment today." Her story could have been true. It was completely believable. Dakota reached into her new Prada bag and pulled out a small mirror. After seeing that her makeup was in check, she slipped it back into her bag.
"Her sessions are closed. Leave it with me and I would be happy to give it to her when she comes out." The missing tooth creeped Dakota out so much that she wondered how stupid a person had to be to leave anything but beauty products with her.
"Uh, thats fine." She examined a way to get inside that session. Abigail Dalton is not defeated to so early. Did she just say Abigail Dalton instead of her own name? She shook the odd feeling off. That was not important at the moment. "Um miss I think I saw a man just walk by without signing in."
She looked up in alarm. "I could lose my job over this." She dashed out of her chair, out the office, and down the hall. She was definitely going to loose her job but it wouldn't be over that man.
Dakota ran down the hall, past the nurse station, through the cafeteria, and down to the disorder area. If she was right, Reese should be in room 2106. She discovered that information from reading Reese's diary. She was suppose to go once a month and today was the day she was suppose to go. The room was the last room to the right. She peeked in. It was completely dark but she could make out a figure staring over a plate of food. Then came some sobbing which was followed by some sniffling. It was almost depressing but Dakota continued to watch as the figure lifted the plate of food and slammed it in to the wall. The figure turned quickly facing Dakota. It was worse then she thought.
