Chapter Ten
Book Three- Sophie
TIME GOES BY FASTER THEN YOU REALIZE. MAKE THE BEST OF EVERY MOMENT. -Erica
"But I am not mentally unstable," I said as dad whisked me out of the hospital with Carrie close by.
"If I believe that then we wouldn't be having this conversation," dad said. The doctors had ran multiple test and most of them were taken when I was sleeping. I was given the results back this morning. They described me as a mentally unstable person who should be checked into a mental institute very soon. Apparently, I was a danger to myself and others.
Madison had left a couple of days ago. She and her mom came by to check in me yesterday but. I haven't heard a word from her since. Another thing that bothered me was my sister's absence. "Please don't send me to the looney bin! I promise I am stable. It was just a freak out over the move and . . . her." I glanced sideways at Carrie who was too busy texting to notice my rudeness but dad noticed.
He bent close to my ear. "Get over it, Soph," he said. "I love Carrie and soon you will might feel the same way. You might even accept her as your mother."
"When pigs learn English," I said in an equally whispered voice.
"I can make you some of your favorite spaghetti. Would that are you feel better?" Carrie asked as she slipped her iPhone quickly in her Gucci knockoff.
"Unless you can make it the way mom use too," I murmured stubbornly. That took her off guard for a moment but immediately regained composure. She engulfed my dad into a conversation about different spaghetti recipes.I refused to speak to any of them until we got home.
The number one thing that had to be waiting for me at home with Zoe. She must have stayed behind to throw me a party. That would explain Madison not calling or texting me today. It would also explain why Zoe wasn't there with me at the hospital. It couldn't possibly be because I had been ignoring her lately. That couldn't be the problem. Sure we fight but she never takes it personally and neither do I.
If I was going to be the guest of honor, I had to make sure I looked my best. I was decent when I left the hospital but now I had to be gorgeous when I stepped inside. My shoulder length black hair couldn't be anything less then perfection. The curls that I had spent hours curling last night were miraculously still in tact. Carrie had brought some clothes from home which was a huge mistake. Instead of just bringing me my stylish line green skinny jeans and ripped white shirt that goes over my lime green t-shirt. She brought me shrunken leopard print pants, a bright yellow crop top and sandals. She is out to get me. I swear it.
When we pulled up in the driveway, I half expected lawn guy, who Madison later told me is Shane, to show me inside. He would be shirtless and wrapping his arm around my waist. Nonetheless, I put together everything I could to make me more appealing then usual. It was much harder in these clothes. I braced myself for a loud welcome from the crowd as we stood by the door. Dad was fumbling with the keys. 'We must get you to Th Grey Realm soon. A ghost transformation will be occurring soon and since you are next in line for princess, you must attend.' The demon inside of me was back. I had to seem stable.
As we stepped inside there was no crowd or anyone shouting welcome. It was just a dark house with a light from the tv shining from the living room. In the living room was Emma. She was relaxed on the couch watching some old film. If it was for my demon urging me to converse with her, I might have just ignored everything. I took one painful step after another until finally I was standing over her. 'Can you please move. This is the only episode I have left to watch before the season finale.'
I didn't want to look unstable in front of dad so I told Emma to come with me to the attic. She followed me up their. The pain of no celebratory party was still on my mind but demon had a better control over me then I had over myself. I wish someone would come and save me but of course it does work like that. 'Repeat after me,' demon said. 'Emma you must take me to The Grey Realm and you must bring along my sister also.'
Choking back a few tears I obediently repeated him. "Emma you must take me to The Grey Realm and you must bring my sister also."
Emma stared quizzically at me. 'I see you have inherited your roots. Your sister should already be there waiting for you. Shall I take her to the castle, m king?' Emma glanced at me but it wasn't me. Sure it was my body and my eyes but she was looking past that. She was actually looking into the eyes of the beast. Or demon.
'You shall do just that. Make sure they go to the holding cell and not a regular one and are you sure that Zoe is waiting for us at the castle? If she isn't then it will be your life and not Erica's,' The demon's voice was projected out of my throat and into the air. It took all of my energy to stop him. It was like trying to stop a speeding train.
'I understand, my king,' Emma said. 'I swear on my life that Zoe is there.'

The creeking silence of age echos through the streets.
Sounds like old wooden floors under heavy feet.
All of the children once running around have evacuated
Or maybe they’ve just disappeared
Where have all the children gone?
Just yesterday they were tying ribbons in trees and swinging from the branches.
They were leaping over hot coals and swooning at anything
Where have all the children gone?
Those of us who remain wonder around like abandoned children in shopping malls.
Where have all the children gone?
Maybe this is just a dream
Maybe we are sleeping in rooms filled with metal shelves
If we put our ears to those shelves they would tell us stories of how they were emptied
Emptied by the fingers of fathers
Emptied into the flesh of their sons and daughters.
Where have all the children gone?
We hope they’re hiding
We hope they’re playing a game
But we know this is really happening
