“Stop biting your lip so hard, Bella. You will hurt yourself” Edward ordered me in his soft, velvet voice. I did as he said. We were in the car on our way to Charlie’s house to give him the news. I was so nervous. I wonder how my heart must be beating. I thought of asking Edward but then let it drop.
“Let’s go out for dinner today.” Edward suggested. As if 'we' will have dinner. He always wanted a way to spend money on me and take me to fancy places but I never allowed him. But now as things were going to change, I agreed to it. He was officially my fiancé now. But I knew this was his way to distract me. “Fine.” I simply replied.
“How come you were so easy this time? Usually you throw a fit on such stuff. I’ll take you to this really amazing place in Port Angeles.” He said with a lot of excitement in his voice. “Compromise, remember?” I said trying to find humor in my voice but I was too anxious right now. I actually wanted to be distracted. “So where are we going?” I said trying to reciprocate his excitement. “As if I’ll tell you” he smirked. And so he pulled over in front of Charlie’s house.
“Hey kids!” Charlie greeted us. “Your mom called. Call her back please.” He pleaded knowing what my mom will do to him if I didn’t. Charlie sensed my mood.
“Is everything alright?” he looked at me and then at Edward.
“Yes Charlie. Things were never better than this ever” Edward replied.
“What happened?” he asked us and got up from the sofa where he was sitting.
“Please have a seat Charlie. Bella and I are going to tell you something. Bella, let’s have a seat as well.” He towed me to the armchair afraid I might pass out due to the nervousness. It must be so amusing to him.
“I’m getting anxious now. Is everything alright?”
“Yes, Dad” Edward replied.
After about ten seconds his eyes popped out and he stared at my hands in disbelief. “WHAT?” he growled.
“Charlie, Bella and I love each other to a degree that now it’s impossible to be apart. I love her and promise to take care of her every single second that I am alive. Would you give us your blessing?” Edward said in an extremely sincere tone. Only I knew how honestly he meant each and every word that he had just said although his tone was so promising.
“Bella?” he looked at me still not over his shock.
“Dad I am absolutely sure about Edward. I want this as well.”
“What’s the hurry?” he mused. And then he snapped as he drew out the conclusion himself. “Are you pregnant?”
“No dad. Of course not.” I said in a disgusted tone. We were not even close to that. Edward and his rules…
“Then? Getting married is a hug step. You must understand.” He said as if we didn’t know that.
“We know Charlie. But this is what I want. I want to take care of her all the time. I want to see her face when I get up in the morning. I want to see her enjoying every second of her life with me and my family. I want to spend all my life trying to make her as happy as she can.” Edward said. There were no words to describe his expression. I could feel his happiness.
“Dad, sooner or later, this is going to happen. The sooner, the better for both of us.” I added.
“But you’re so young. What about college?”
“We are going to go to Dartmouth together, dad.” I told him. His eyes popped out again. I was sure another surprise would give him a heart attack.
He was silent. After a couple of heartbeats, I started to worry about him. He was still. Just like a vampire. He didn’t move an inch. He just blinked his eyes a couple of times. And then he got up. This was starting to scare me now. Even Edward was startled. How could that happen? And then he walked towards us and hugged us. Thank god for the angle at which were sitting that he did not notice Edward’s body much.
“But what about your mom?” he smirked breaking away from the hug which marked his approval. And that did it. I was all nervous and anxious again. “I’ll take care of it.” Edward smiled as he picked up the phone and handed it to me to dial the number. I gave it back to him once it started ringing.
“Good evening Renee.” Edward greeted her. “You have no idea what just happened. Yesterday was one of the happiest days of my life.” He said. I had to wait for him to respond again as she spoke. “I’ll give you three guesses.” He flashed a smile at me. “No, of course not.” He said embarrassed. I immediately knew what my mom must have thought. “But it’s going to be soon” he smiled his crooked smile. “You have two more guesses left. Come on! “. After another pause he chuckled. “No Renee you dodnt get any hints.” He was enjoying this kiddish game with my mom just as much as I knew she was. “OK fine. Due to the news, you will have to come to Forks with Phil and help Esme out” he told her.
He was a stone again and the silence was killing me. Charlie was anxious as well. He had been counting on my mother’s over reaction. I held out my hand for the phone. But Edward ignored it.
Oh mom! Just like your daughter, you always startle me” he chuckled again. “You scared me for a moment. There is nothing more we want but your blessings.” I was jarred. Was my mom really happy? Or was all of the overreaction saved for me? “Yes yes, you are right about the air fare…” he trailed on with her and went into the kitchen enjoying talking to her.
“I don’t understand” Charlie said amazed.
“Did I dial the number wrong?” I mused. “Did you hear what I heard?”
“I can’t believe it. It’s next to impossible.”
I shook my head trying to see things clearly. How come my mother didn’t object to getting married at eighteen?
“But I think she was prepared for it.” He said.
“What?” my head snapped up.
“Bella we both knew how things between you and Edward were. We know you can’t stay apart. We have witnessed that.” He shuddered at the thought. “She knows that you have never been just a teenager, Bella. You know how to handle life well. She knows you will stick to your decision.”
That explained a lot. And as I was trying to absorb it, Edward came into view. He was flipping the phone in his hands. “See, I told you everything is going to be just fine.” He smiled at me. And then relief flushed through me. It was over.
“Charlie, do you have plans for dinner?” Edward asked.
“Oh Bells, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you before but I ate at the station today. I’m going to doze off early now. The big game is tomorrow. I hope you didn’t do anything special. Did you?”
“No dad. Edward and I are going for dinner. Is it alright?”
“Of course. Now if you’ll excuse me” he said getting up. I knew I must leave him alone. He needed time to wrap his head around the changes which are going to follow soon. As soon as he left the room, Edward looked at me. “Do you wish to get dressed?”
“Yeah, I think. Where are we going anyway?”
“Get dressed. I’ll be in the car” he told me ignoring my question.
I let it go for the moment. I would find out where we were going in the car.
“There is a step here. And another one. Now walk straight with me.” Edward directed me as we had gotten out of the car. He had blind folded me when we were near Port Angeles. “And there we go.” He said opening my blind fold.
As I looked around me, I found myself in that very restaurant where Edward and I had our first meal together. On the table before which we were standing was one mushroom ravioli ready and two cokes. Before I could react Edward said “Remember this place?” with a very gentle smile on his face.
Of course I remembered that place. That was the first night when Edward and I had spent alone. He had told me a lot about himself and his family and I had realized later that night, that I was in love with him.
“Oh Edward” I smiled. The smile soon broke because right now I was overwhelmed with the emotions of the last night when we were here. It was such a beautiful moment.
“From where did this strike your brain?” I asked him sitting down as even he did.
“That last night when we were here was the starting of a completely new, happy life for me and you as well. Now while we are going to start another beautiful journey married, I thought of making this night the preface of our story” he explained.
I was speechless.
