Chapter 24 – The Special Visitor
You can’t tell him you love him because you’re not in love with him.
Katara mulled painfully over Zuko’s words. She had thought of that once for a brief second when she and Aang were on a date. They just sounded more real coming from his lips.
Maybe you’re mistaking your prideful and happy feelings for him for being in love.
Was that true? Was that how she was feeling when she saw Aang next to Zuko a few months ago at Zuko’s coronation? She remembered she did feel mostly proud…so proud. Everyone was cheering and screaming his name. It was so hard not to feel proud. Aang was her only hope before.
But was that all he was? Only hope? No. Katara always cared for Aang, even when she didn’t know that he was the Avatar. Though back then she cared for him like if he was her little brother. So, was their relationship wrong now because of the fact of how she had thought of him?
Katara shook her head. She was so confused. She curled up into a ball on the couch and hugged her knees, feeling insecure.
All the men had left and she was by herself in the quiet house. She tried to ignore the constant crushing feeling in her stomach indicating that she was hungry, but it was too painful to neglect. So she got up and went to Ursa’s house next door. When she opened the door she was surprised to see whom Aang was laughing with— On Ji. She was his friend from when he was in a Fire Nation school for a couple of days a while back. Nobody knew he was the Avatar in the school, so Katara was puzzled.
“Katara!” Aang exclaimed with a smile on his face. He grabbed On Ji’s hand and ran to her, both of them still giggling. “Katara, remember On Ji? Toph and I ran into her today on the street.”
On Ji let go of Aang’s hand and bowed to Katara. “It’s finally nice to meet you. Aang’s told me so much about his wonderful girlfriend!”
So not only did they hold hands, but they also have been talking a lot. Katara felt like she should be jealous, and was surprised that she wasn’t. She felt nothing.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you too,” she replied in a steady manner.
On Ji placed her hand on Aang’s shoulder. “I can’t believe that sweet Kuzan I knew was really Avatar Aang!”
“Right, you didn’t know,” Katara recalled. “But, what are you doing here? In this Earth Kingdom town, I mean?”
“I moved here with my parents. They liked to travel a lot and see the world,” she answered.
“Now that we all have met, let’s get out of the door way,” Aang suggested. “Ursa and Zuko are probably done with dinner by now. Let’s go to the dining room.”
Aang took Katara’s hand that time as they walked to the table. Sure enough, the table was loaded with boar-cow steak and bread. Zuko, Sokka, Suki and Toph were already waiting. Ursa and Ta Min were there too. Katara sat across from Zuko on the other side of the table. Aang sat next to her and On Ji sat on his other side. He looked at Katara with googly eyes and she looked at him too with soft ones. She felt another pair of eyes on her that she did not expect. They strangely felt nicer than Aang’s, even though she didn’t know who it was yet.
She tore away from Aang’s stare with no problem and looked to see who it was. Her eyes locked with Zuko’s. He blushed and looked away. Maybe he wasn’t looking at her after all. Katara didn’t think that he liked her in the way that he looked at her. She turned around to see if he was blushing at anyone behind her. Mai was walking toward the table to get some food, but she couldn’t be the one that he was looking at. For crying out loud he just broke up with her! So the girl he was looking at could be no other than Katara. But, why?
“I had a great time tonight, Aang,” On Ji told him.
They were now in the new house. Aang and On Ji were at the doorway saying good-bye. Katara was sitting on the couch waiting for Aang to join her. Sokka, Suki and Toph were already asleep in their new rooms. Katara wasn’t tired yet, even though she was full and was in her silk, Earth Kingdom nightgown.
“I did too On Ji,” Aang said, smiling in a crooked way.
“I have no school again tomorrow, Aang. And I was wondering if I could come over again. I would love to learn some new dance moves,” On Ji offered.
“Sure! I’d love that!” Aang agreed.
“See you then,” She said sweetly as she started to walk off.
“Bye!” he called after her. He closed the door and jumped next to Katara on the couch. He gave her a big kiss on the cheek. “I love you. You are so beautiful.”
Katara decided to try out Zuko’s advice. She closed her eyes and picture Aang as her brother. She thought it would be hard, considering they were together, but it wasn’t at all.
“I love you too,” Katara said. Her eyes fluttered open to look at Aang and found that he had a stunned expression on his face. What was so weird about what she had just said?
That’s when she realized that it was the first time she ever said “I love you” to Aang directly, and that was only when she pictured him as a brother.
Zuko was right.
She could only say “I love you” if she was thinking of him like a brother. This was going to be a problem…
