Playbill Magazine?
Hi guys, I have been hearing a lot of mixed review about this musical, my parents and younger brother had seen it thus making me the only family member not to see it. So here are my reasons why.

1. The Songs

I had the original soundtrack with Idina Menzel in it, aside from 'Defying Gravity', my favourite song is 'For Good' because it's sad and it is also the scene where Glinda tells Elphaba that they are not going to seeing each EVER again! It makes my heart cries out!

2. Moral Values

It also teaches about friendship, despite going our separate ways. If I were to see this, I would be very touch by the musical itself.

3. Funny Moments

Contrary to my beliefs, I thought that the story-line was dark and sinister, but upon watching a scene in it. The musical has some comedic moments that I will laugh and enjoy it even more!

The Wizard and I

There you have it, my 3 reasons for watching this amazing musical. Do you agree?

ACT I
[Scene 1 - No One Mourns The Wicked]

Ozians:
GOOD NEWS, SHE'S DEAD!
THE WITCH OF THE WEST IS DEAD!
THE WICKEDEST WITCH THERE EVER WAS,
THE ENEMY OF ALL OF US HERE IN OZ,
IS DEAD! GOOD NEWS! GOOD NEWS!
Ozian: Look, it's Glinda!
Glinda floats in on a giant bubble
Glinda: It's good to see me, isn't it? (Ozians Agree) No need to respond that was rhetorical. Fellow Ozians:
LET US BE GLAD,
LET US BE GRATEFUL,
LET US REJOICIFY THAT GOODNESS COULD SUBDUE
THE WICKED WORKINGS OF YOU KNOW WHO!
ISN'T IT NICE TO KNOW
THAT GOOD WILL CONQUER EVIL?
THE TRUTH WE ALL BELIEVE'LL BY AND BY
OUTLIVE A LIE
FOR YOU AND...
Ozian: Glinda! Exactly how dead is she?
Glinda: Well, there has been much rumor and speculation... innuendo, outuendo... but let me set the record straight. According to the Time Dragon Clock, the melting occurred at the 13th hour; a direct result of a bucket of water thrown by a female child. Yes, the Wicked Witch of the West is dead!

WARNING! CONTAINS SPOILERS!

1. Melena's love interest and Elphaba's heritage.
In the book, Melena says she may have been raped by a munchin, possibly causing her to conceive Elphaba. In the musical however, it is revealed that Melena had an affair with the wizard of Oz, who was Elphaba's father. in the book, the wizard of oz has absolutely nothing to do with Melena.

2. Frex's occupation.
Frex's job is that of a preacher/missionary in the novel, while in the musical he is a governor.

3. Shell.
In the book, Elphaba is one of three children, and has a younger brother named Shell. In the production, Elphaba states she is one of two. (The other obviously being Nessa.)

4. Madame Morrible's expectations of Glinda.
In the musical, Glinda is scorned by madame morrible, who believes she is a unworthy sorceress. In the book however, Morrible notes that she weilds great power and potential.

Glinda and Elphaba
GLINDA:
I've heard it said
That people come int our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them
And we help them in return
Well I don't know if belive that's true
But I know I'm who I am today
Because I knew you...

Like a comet pulled fron orbit
As it passes a un
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Halfway through the wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
I have been changed for good

ELPHABA:
Well it may be
That we will never meet again
In this lifetime

So let me say before we part
So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
You'll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
By being my friend

Like a ship blown from it's moorning

When the word "Wicked" comes to mind, you'll probably think of Elphaba, who's compelling story of rejection by society overshadows (and rightly so) many other characters.
Failing that, your mind would most likely drift to the lovable airhead that is Glinda Upland, and her famously careless quips.
You might think of Fyiero, or Boq, perhaps even Madame Morrible.

But the character which will always have a special place in my heart, is- surprisingly-
Nessarose Thropp.

Created mainly to serve as a tool for Elphaba's developement, and to fill the "who's the wicked witch of the east?" hole in L.Frank Baum's original novel, she usually passes un-noticed in both the production and the book.

However- while i do admit her presence in the book frustrated me*- on the stage i only had to take one look at her before deciding she was dynamite.

Firstly, it was refreshing to see (even if her portrayer could walk), a handicapible character.

Hey lovers of WICKED,

My name is Ryan Jackson and I am the current dance swing on the 2nd Nat'l of Wicked and I was wondering if we could enlist your help.

It is that time of year when broadway shows and touring companies get together to raise money for Broadway Cares/ Equity fights AIDS and we are trying out some new ideas.

We are auctioning off a "Wicked Experience" currently in Memphis and if it goes well then also in Tulsa and Kalamazoo. The "Wicked Experience" winner gets to take a friend and come backstage for a pre-show guided tour then goes to the star dressing room to watch Elphaba get painted green. After the transformation is complete and a "wicked west" is made the winner and their friend will have their photo taken with her, maybe get some special wicked treats then be escorted out to watch the show in 2 house seats. We are kind of excited about this prize but are doing a very grassroots approach to getting the word out and we were hoping you could help us raise money for an amazing cause and/or score the Wicked Experience for yourself ;-)

ELPHABA:

You really don't have to do that...

GALINDA:

Whenever I see someone less fortunate than I,
And let's face it, who isn't less fortunate than I?
My tender heart tends to start to bleed.
And when someone needs a makeover,
I simply have to take over!
I know, I know exactly what they need!

And even in your case,
Though it's the toughest case I've yet to face,
Don't worry, I'm determined to succeed!
Follow my lead,
And yes indeed, you will be...

POPULAR!
You're gonna be popular!
I'll teach you the proper poise,
When you talk to boys,
Little ways to flirt and flounce,
ooh!
I'll show you what shoes to wear!
How to fix your hair!

Every day, the terror grows!
All of Oz is ever on alert!
That's the way with Wicked -
Spreading fear where e'er she goes
Seeking out new victims she can hurt!

A HYSTERICAL WOMAN
Like some terrible green blizzard
Throughout the land she flies:

AN OUTRAGED MAN
Defaming our poor Wizard
With her calumnies and lies!

ALL
She lies!
Save us from the Wicked!
Shield us so we won't be hexed!
Give us warning:
Where will she strike next?
Where will she strike next?
Where will she strike next!?

Already dead, or bleeding?

No act of charity goes unresented

My road of good intentions
