Will curses under his breath as he rushes around the apartment in a frenzy. He’s late for school and his keys have mysteriously disappeared on him. In his attempt to find his missing keys, Will skirts over to the nightstand and unceremoniously empties the contents of the drawer onto the table top and accidentally knocks over the little tin Sonny had placed there.
Will blinks when he realizes it’s Sonny’s resolution tin. He’s quite sure it hadn’t been on the nightstand when they’d gone to sleep the previous evening. He bites his lip because he’s curious to know what Sonny’s written down, but he vows not to look because it’s Sonny’s resolution and he’ll share it with Will if he wants to.
Proud of himself for pushing away his curiosity, Will sits down on the bed to better be able to pick it up off the floor. His hand hovers over the tin when he sees that the cover has fallen off and the little piece of paper is sticking out the top.
His resolve failing him, Will picks up the tin and pulls the tiny strip of looseleaf out of the box. He gasps loudly as his eyes read the lone sentence written in Sonny’s chicken-scratch handwriting:
2013: Get Will Horton To Marry Me
“Will? Are you okay?” Sonny asks, hurrying into the room from the bathroom. “I heard you gasp and was wor-” He stops speaking mid-sentence when he notices the tin in one of Will’s hands and the piece of paper in the other.
His face ashen, he stares wide-eyed at Will, who stares back with equally wide eyes and his mouth hanging open in surprise, all thoughts of his classes forgotten.
After a beat, Sonny says, “I - you weren’t supposed to see that.”
“I knocked the tin over. It fell out,” Will answers automatically.
Sonny nervously runs his hand across the back of his head and walks over to the bed. He silently takes the paper out of Will’s hand and stuffs it back into the tin.
“Just pretend this never happened, okay?” Sonny mumbles and places the tin back on the nightstand.
“Wait, why?” Will asks and grabs Sonny’s hand as he passes by.
“It’s stupid, okay? We just sorted things out between us and you just moved back in here and you probably think I’m crazy because we’re moving way too quickly and you’re trying to figure out how you’re gonna be a dad and-“
“Sonny!” Will interrupts Sonny’s rambling.
Sonny blinks down at him and sits down on the bed when Will gently tugs on his hand.
“When did you write that?” Will asks gently with a small smile.
“Last night. After you fell asleep.”
“After everything, you want to marry me?”
Sonny searches Will’s eyes for a couple seconds and then nods slightly. “I - I didn’t exactly picture being a dad so soon, but it’s your child and I love you, so I know I’m gonna love him or her.”
Will grins at Sonny and squeezes his hand.
He continues, “I know I said that maybe loving you wasn’t enough to get past you not telling me about the baby, but I did a lot of thinking after I said that and I - I started thinking about my future and where I saw myself in a few years. And every time I thought about it, all I saw was me and you and the baby.”
He stops talking and looks at Will who’s smiling broadly at him.
“Yeah?” Will whispers and shifts his body so that they’re sitting with their legs brushing.
Sonny smiles. “Yeah.”
Will leans over and places a soft kiss on Sonny’s lips. When he pulls away, he asks, “Aren’t you gonna ask me?”
“Ask you what?” Sonny responds stupidly.
Will raises his eyebrows and smirks.
After a second, Sonny’s eyes go wide when he realizes what Will is suggesting. “I - but it was just a thought. I - I don’t have - I was gonna plan something and I - what?”
Will is laughing at him.
“Do you really think I care about a fancy dinner and flowers and candy? Or even a ring?” Will answers in all seriousness.
Will gently cups Sonny’s face in his hands. “I love you, Sonny, more than anything. You have no idea how scared I was that I’d ruined everything with you. That’d I’d never see you smile or look at me again the way that you do. That I’d never get to hold your hand again.” He slips one of his hands into one of Sonny’s. “That I’d never get to run my fingers through your hair again.” He lets his fingertips tangle in the hair at the base of Sonny’s neck. “That - that I’d never get to kiss you again.” His voice breaks slightly as he’s overcome with emotion and he gives Sonny a gentle but lingering kiss.
When he pulls away, Will adds shyly, “That I’d never get to make love to you again.”
Sonny stares at him without saying anything and Will repeats his question. “So are you gonna ask me?”
Sonny opens and closes his mouth a couple times before sliding off the bed and onto his right knee on the floor. His hand is still clasped in Will’s and he takes the other one is free one.
Will smiles serenely down at him and Sonny simply asks, “Will Horton, will you marry me?”
Will nods furiously, mumbles, “Of course, you idiot,” pulls Sonny up off the floor, and smashes their lips together.
