Writing Question

Would this be a nice character trait or too annoying to read?

I was thinking about having a character in my story have a speech problem and stutter a lot. I think it'd make them more human and so it's not like they're flawless or anything, but they still overcome it. But I was wondering if it would end up being too annoying to read? Something like:

"H-- Hi, m-my my n--n--name i--is...."

What do you think?

well you can make him stutter, but dont make him stutter too much. I would his speech problem be to pause in the middle of a sentence or something less complicated.

If you included it at certain points throughout it could make the reader get attached to the charecter, but do it in a subtle ways to make it attachable and not unreadable. Good idea though :) I'm sure your story will be fantastic!

I think it really depends how often you make him/her do it.

You could start off with that as a good attention grabber at the beginning of your novel. Just use that sometimes, not too often. It would be extremely annoying and disturbing to have him/her do that all the time. You should exaggerate the part where he/she overcomes his/her speech problem, which would make the story very interesting and better to read.

You can include the stuttering in dialog everynow and then, just write "he stuttered at the start, or he had to repeat this because his voice was shaking make it inauble...." or something.

I think it may get a little annoying if the character does it that heavily all the time. Maybe they stutter a lot more around new people they have never met before but a lot less around the people they know.

Yeah, that is kind of annoying. And unoriginal. Far too many writers have used that already.

Yea it wpuld be annoying but you have got to realize if you overdid the whole stuttering prob. He could have a prob only with new people he meet. He could be a shy stutter!
