-7 and a half hours later-
As I walked out of the school, I saw Cameron signaling me over to his car. I walked up to him and he told me to get in, which I did. As he started up the car, I couldn't help but feel like Cameron was upset with me. "Where are we going?"
"Somewhere we can talk."
"About?"
"I'll let you know when we get there." I nodded and kept quiet for the whole ride.
Half an hour later, Cameron parked in the beach parking lot. He took the key out of the ignition and put them in a cup holder. He then looked at me with a very disappointed look.
"What do you want to talk about?"
"I want to talk about the real reason why you weren't with me for my birthday."
"I told you I got the flu. And when did you care so much?"
"I don't. I just want to know the truth."
"I had the flu-"
"I know you didn't have the flu!"
I knew he knew that I was lying! "Yes, I didn't have the flu."
"So what happened?"
"The truth?"
"Yes."
"Well..I can't tell you the truth."
"Why?"
"Because you wouldn't understand." I hadn't told Cameron about my passion for mythological creatures.
"I wouldn't understand?"
I nodded.
"Oh." That's how he said the last time, with a disappointed tone. Cameron grabbed his car keys from the cup holder, put them in the ignition, started the car, and drove back onto the road opposite the beach. After another half an hour drive, he pulled up in front of my house.
"See you at 8?"
"Yeah."
I kissed him on the cheek and got out of the car. After I closed the door, he drove off.
As I walked into my grandmother's house, she told me to come in the living room. She was watching the news, which was talking about a ship wreck just off the coast of our local beach.
"The reports say a boat by the name of S.S. Guillermo crashed into jagged rocks off the coast when a sudden current change steered off course. Fortunately, the captain on board was unharmed", said the anchor woman. "Here's John with the captain. John?"
The screen then showed an anchor man in a suit standing next to a man with a fishing jacket on, two men I assumed was John and the captain of the wrecked ship. "Well Maria, there have been many witnesses to the crash, but only the captain knows what happened for sure." He put the microphone in the captain face.
The captain said, "Well, the waters seemed calm and steady. Then all of a sudden a gust of this strong head wind came and the water became shakey. It all happened so fast that I didn't even blink before it was over."
"Do have any ideas on how this happened?"
"Some people may call me crazy, but I think it was the doing of a sea witch."
Could I have done that?
"Well, I believe you Captain Dammus."
Dammus? That's Cameron's last name. Did I wreck Mr.Dammus' boat?
"Back to you, Maria."
My grandmother turned the television off. "A sea witch? In Miami?"
"You'd be surprised, Grandma. I actually found one of those in that swamp where men disappear."
My grandmother ran up to me with a concerned look. "It didn't scratch you, did it?"
"You know I'm always cautious around the creatures."
"No dear, you have to tell me. Did it scratch you?"
"If it did, what would happen?"
"Well, you would slowly metamorphosis into a sea witch. Permanently."
It was how she put emphasis on the word 'permanently' that made want to tell her. But I didn't. "No, Grandma."
Her face relaxed. "Thank heavens." She kissed my forehead. "So how was your day?"
-Later That Day-
It was 7:30 pm. I got dressed and did my hair. By the I was done applying my make up, it was 7:45. Cameron will be here in 15 minutes. As I waited in the living room for him to arrive, I thought about a few things. Cameron's probably still upset about me not telling him what happened on our birth-date. Should I tell him about the mythological creatures? If I do, what would he think? The door bell rang.
My grandma answered the door. "Hello Cameron, sweetie."
I got up from the couch and walked towards them.........................................................
