Just something I started writing a long time ago and decided to post it. I have more written so if someone is interested let me know.
Camp Misery
Kassandra Riley threw a shirt at her open suitcase and let out a groan of frustration.
“ UGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!” her scream brought her ten-year-old brother running into her room, without knocking.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN HERE?” Kassie bellowed and chucked a shoe at him.
Kenny ducked and smiled. “ Dustin said to tell you that he’s ready to leave. He says you have ten minutes and then he’s leaving without you.”
Kassie shot a glare at her brother.
“ Tell Dustin that he can hold his horses. And you can get out of my room!” Kassie snapped. “ Kenny!” She yelled after he had stood there a minute looking confused.
“ Dustin doesn’t have any horses, so how can he hold them?” Kenny cocked his head to the side, studying her thoughtfully.
“ Ugh…never mind. Its just a figure of speech. Now, be a dear and LEAVE ME ALONE!” her last words turned to a shriek.
“ How can I be a deer when I’m a boy?” Kenny frowned, thinking hard. “ I can try really hard Kass, but I don’t think its gonna work.”
Kassie closed her eyes and sucked in a calming breathe.
“ Just get out Kenny, ok? Tell Dustin that I will be down in ten minutes.”
“ Okay.” Kenny shrugged and walked out the door.
Kassie looked around, trying to figure out what she hadn’t packed yet. This would be her third year going to Camp Willow… and her third year trying to get Bryan Phillips to ask her out. Bryan was the camp’s “hottie”. All the girls wanted to be his date for the camp dance. Kassie knew that this year was her year! She had her hair layered and actually found herself kinda pretty, enough to give her confidence that she could win Bryan. She was trying to figure out the best outfits to bring out her tan and her long legs. That was something that she hated sometimes and loved others. She was five foot ten, and almost taller that all the guys. It also caused her problems with the other girls who were jealous of her model like thinness and height.
“ Kassie!” Dustin’s deep voice echoed up the stairs to her room.
“ I’m coming!”
Dustin was her other help for capturing Bryan’s heart this year. Bryan was on of Dustin’s best friends and Kassie was counting on that to help her out.
She quickly grabbed her three suitcases and her cosmetics bag and rushed down the stairs in short jean cutoffs and a yellow tank top.
Dustin rose from the couch with a groan.
“ Finally! I thought I would have to come up and drag you down here.”
Kassie flashed a smiled at her older brother and replied saucily. “ You could have tried.”
Dustin grinned and grabbed his bags. “ See you next month, Mom. Bye Dad.” he called as he walked out to his Ford F250.
Kassie hurried over and kissed her mom and dad’s cheek, ruffled Kenny’s hair and rushed out the door. She threw her bags in the back seat of Dustin’s truck and hopped in the front seat.
“ Its off to camp we go!” Dustin hollered cheerfully and turned on the radio, blaring T.I.’s “ Whatever You Like”.
~ Three hours later, Dustin shook her awake as they drove under the huge sign that read “ Camp Willow”.
“ We’re here!” He said and lightly punched her shoulder. Kassie grinned and looked at her brother. He had dirty blonde hair that was on the long side, just long enough that it flipped out on the ends and was so tanned Kassie was jealous of his golden bronze. He was at least five inches taller than her and athletic. His blue eyes sparkled when he smiled. In other words he was a knock out but Kassie would never admit it to him. He was too stuck up already.
They pulled up to the main cabin’s entrance and Kassie briefly noticed the camp’s owner talking to another adult and a boy about her brothers age that looked devastatingly beautiful from this distance before she was bombarded with people.
A boy yanked open the door while someone else unbuckled her and grabbed her. She was suddenly looking at the world upside down as she was slung over his shoulder.
“ Hey Greg!” She heard her brother said to the boy that had opened the door and then added. “ Bryan, please don’t break my sister. It wouldn’t really bother me but I think my parents wouldn’t like it that much.”
She felt the body under rumbled as he laughed.
“ No problem, Dustin. I’m just gonna cool her off a little since she’s lookin so hott.”
Kassie gasped and struggled to get loose. She had already done her hair and makeup!
“ Bryan! Please don’t. I’m begging you!” She said pleadingly.
“ Oh all right. But you have it coming! You‘re going into the lake before camp‘s over.” Bryan release his grip on her legs and she tumbled to the ground. He caught her before she hit and she looked up into his handsome face.
“ That was not very nice.” She scolded lightly. She grinned in spite of herself as she took in his dark chocolate hair and his warm green eyes. His full lips parted and revealed straight, even teeth.
“ It’s good to see you Kassie. I missed you.” Bryan said softly, his eyes turning serious.
Kassie grinned and playfully patted his tanned cheek. “ Of course you did! But its ok, because I missed you too.”
Bryan made a show of kissing her palm and then while she was distracted, hoisting her back over his shoulder, but this time going back toward the cabins and not the lake. As he passed the camp owner and the other two people, Mr. Jenks, who everyone called Boss, called out the him.
“ Bryan, please put Miss Riley down. I need to speak to her.” His firm voice hinted at laughter and when Kassie could see the world right, he was smiling.
“ See you later Kass.” Bryan called as he went off to find the boys. The boys came to camp two weeks early and girls came a week after them then the campers arrived. But since Dustin was her ride, she always came two weeks early too.
“ Kassie, I’d like for you to meet Mr. Parks.” He said gesturing to the adult in the business suit. She shook his pudgy hand and barely kept from grimacing at the sweat on it. “ And this is Kyan. He’ll be one of the counselors this year, and Kassie, I’m assigning you to be his friend and guide. You’ll will also be sharing your group of kids with him.”
Kassie stuck her hand out to shake but Kyan just stood there and glowered at her. She swallowed and took a small step back.
“Um nice to meet you, Kyan." Kassie managed softly.
Kyan said nothing and just stared at her and then slowly raked her with a look that went from her head to her toes. Kassie tingled as this gorgeous boy looked her up and down. His black hair had a styled messy look and was very darkly tanned. When she looked closer, she could tell he was at least half Native American. He was at least her brothers height, maybe taller. But all in all, overly intimidating. When he finally met her eyes straight on, she gasped and took another step back. His eyes were a startling shade of blue, a shade so light it was like crystal. They seemed to darken as his gaze dropped to her lips and Kassie swallowed hard again. Attraction buzzed between them so strong, Kassie thought that any minute Boss would ask if anyone else heard a buzz.
" Kassie, why don't you show Kyan to his cabin? He'll be in the one right beside your's." Kassie nodded and looked back as Kyan stooped to pick up two duffle bags and followed behind her. She tried not to stare as his biceps bulged as he adjusted his grip on one bag, " Do you want me to take one?" Kassie asked reaching for one of the bags.
" Do I look like I need help?" The sound of his voice stopped her dead in her tracks. His deep voice held only a very slight trace of his heritage. But it was the coldness that scared her the most. The sound of indifference. She could immediately tell that this was not going to be easy. She finally dropped her hand that had been suspended between them.
" No, you don't. I was just trying to be nice."
Kyan's eyes raked her thoughtfully.
Then he grunted and started walking again. " I don't need anyone to be nice to me."
Kassie hurried to lead the way again. Before she could think, her temper sparked, then flared. She whirled to face him, her eyes blazing.
“ You know what? You don’t have to be so rude. We have to be with each other so we might as well try to get along. I don’t want to be with you as much as you don’t want to be here with me. You are so totally ruining my chances with him! UGH!” She snapped. They were beside her cabin. Suddenly, Kyan’s large hands grabbed her upper arms and he pushed her against the rough wood. Kassie’s breathing sped up, not that she was afraid, but that Kyan was touching her. His hands were warm against her skin.
“ What do you mean by that?” He hissed.
Kassie just stared at him stubbornly. His hands slid down to her wrists and then wrenched them up by her head. Kassie glared at him and he smiled slowly.
“ You wanna tell me what chances I’m ruining for you?”
Kassie would have melted if he hadn’t been holding her arms up. He leaned closer and her breathing increased more, if possible. Kassie looked into his eerily light eyes and then let her gaze dropped to his mouth, which was hovering closer and closer, a small smile forming. His smile got bigger as he noticed where her gaze was looking.
“ You know, the best way to win a guy is to make him jealous.”
Kassie tore her gaze from his lips and back to his eyes.
“ Are you offering?” She managed to lick her dry lips.
“ Hmm. Depends if you give me what I want.”
Kassie looked up at him shocked, and started to struggle.
“ Absolutely not. No way, Jose. Nope. I’ll just get him by myself.” She said quickly and tried to get loose from his iron grasp.
“ Now wait a minute. You misunderstood.”
“ Let go of me NOW!” Kassie almost yelled. Suddenly, Kyan was wrenched away from her and stumbling back.
“ Is there a problem here, Kass?” Kassie looked up quickly to see one of Dustin’s friends, Tommy, standing there with a fist clenched. Kyan was smoothing his shirt where Tommy had grabbed him.
“ No. Its fine Tommy. Thanks anyway. Kyan was just talking to me.”
“ Oh really? Who is this Indian anyways?” Tommy growled. Kassie noticed again his clenched fists and how he was moving slowly toward Kyan.
“ Tommy. Stop. Its fine, really. Kyan is a new counselor. I‘m showing him the ropes. He‘s perfectly fine.” She walked forward until she was between them. She gently placed a hand on Tommy’s chest and pushed back.
“ Go back to Dustin and Bryan, Tommy. I’m fine. You know that I’ll scream if I’m in trouble.”
Tommy growled something inaudibly about Indian’s and stalked away. Kassie turned back to Kyan and saw that his own fists were clenched and a muscle in his clenched jaw ticked.
“ Hey.” Kassie frowned and walked over to him. “ Its ok. Don’t let him get to you. He’s a jerk.” Kyan barely looked at her before staring at the spot where Tommy disappeared.
“ Kyan.” Kassie reached up and cupped a hand on each side of his face and drug him down to her level. “ Forget about him. Its fine. This is your first day. Don’t get in a fight.” Kyan finally blinked and relaxed.
“ You ok now?” Kassie asked, still not releasing his face. Kyan blinked again and nodded.
“ Yeah. I’m good.”
“ Ok. Now come with me.” She dropped her hands from his face an picked up one of his bags and led the way to his cabin that thankfully he occupied alone. She opened the door and slung his bag onto his bed.
“ Sit.” She ordered.
Kyan sat on the bed, looking slightly confused.
“ Now. Tell me why you’re here. You don’t look like the type to come to camp ‘for the kids’.” Kassie demanded.
Kyan sighed and leaned back on the bed. “ No. You’re right. This is my last chance. If I don’t get a good report. See, I’m kinda on a parole. If I get a good report from here, I’m free to go. If I don’t, I’m required two years of community service.”
Kassie nodded and asked, “ What did you do?”
Kyan sat up quickly and avoided her gaze. “ It doesn’t matter. Will you go? I want to unpack. I’ll meet you later.”
“ Oh. Yeah, um ok then. I’ll catch you later.” Kassie said softly and went out the door.
