“What's the plan?” Wally whispered as he and Becca danced to the song.
“Just keep playing as we are. I had Devin let the others know. We're the inside spies. Any sign, we let them know. And vice versa.”
“So we have to keep faking liking each other until we find find Robin?”
“That would be correct.”
For some odd reason, Wally felt his heart sink. There was something about Becca that drew his attention. It made him want to focus. And that was saying a lot, considering his long record of NOT being able to pay attention. He pulled Becca jut a little bit closer and was surprised when she gently laid her head on his shoulder.
“What do you miss the most?” he asked. “About Robin I mean.”
“Hmmm. That's a loaded question, ain't it speedster? I guess I miss being around him. He's been through a lot in his thirteen years. Yet he can be happy and laughing around me; actually laughing. And his smirk is replaced by a genuine smile. That's what I miss the most.”
“Did you two ever dance? For real I mean.”
“Yeah. Quite a bit. He's an amazing dancer. His family background helps with that.”
“What else did you two do for fun?”
“Well, most of the time we would just stroll. Never doing much just talking. Sometimes a movie or a snack or something. But we mostly just did whatever.”
“Really? You two never went to an amusement park or something?”
Becca lifted her head to look at his green eyes.
“No. I have this philosophy Wally. If you're with the person you love, it doesn't matter what you do; the spotlight will still be on you.”
“Wow...that's really...accurate Becca.”
“Thanks. I think it describes Robin and me perfectly. As long as we're together, it doesn't matter what type of day it is. Rain won't stop us and snow can't freeze our love. Nothing can burn our bond and winds can't shake it. That's what love is.”
Becca blinked up at Wally in surprise when he kissed her cheek.
“What was that for?” she asked.
“I don't know,” Wally answered with a small smile.
A sudden beeping interrupted their conversation and Becca pulled away. Wally felt strangely sad at the empty feeling in his heart when Becca left his arms. He watched Becca, head tilted. She took out her cell phone and looked at the new message.
“They found him!”
“How is he today?”
“Ready sir. All the cells are in place. Just as they have been the last three times.”
“Yes. See this one does not fail. Is he awake?”
“Umm...yes! Charts show his stability and his vital signs are all normal.”
“Start the process.”
He could hear a swoosh of fabric and his head was trying to get a better picture through his senses. Every little thing set him off and his mind buzzed. But a sudden hum sounded loudly, draining his thoughts. He felt the shock of a thousand lightning bolts and screamed. He pulled against his restraints but it didn't help; they were strapped tightly. Everything hurt and the one thought that had kept him from going completely insane vanished. He'd endured this treatment for three weeks; Batman hadn't come. His father had failed him. But just as he began to give up, another person entered his mind; one he'd known his whole life. Someone who wouldn't give up until he was found. And as he began to slip back into a deep sleep, despite the treatment, he couldn't help the one thought that escaped his heart and entered his mind. Becca, please find me....
