I'm very happy that it was popular, and so should it be. Although lacking a second layer, this pretty film set in a boarding school for wayward boys has the edge for those who don't quite understand the French way of thinking. It's quite easy to understand without subtitles. This film was a turning point as it discovered some new talent, first and foremost Jean-Baptiste Maunier, then 14, who played the soprano soloist Morhange. Another who stood out was the little orphan Pepinot, played by Maxence Perrin. Not to mention the troublemaker, although I'm not sure of his character name or real name...
I saw the play in November 2007 and never looked back. I must say that I didn't find it funny at first, but when it got to the trousers down moment I was in hysterics, but I was also mortified. That poor lad and also I was shocked how anyone let alone a small, Jewish boy from Sheffield could pluck up the courage to sing to the one he loves, I was cringing in my seat, nothing to do with his acting, he was excellent.
