Edward helped her TRY to extend her shield when they were all training, but at the time Bella could only extend it briefly. It was only just before the battle that Bella realised that her mental block was causing her to hold the shield to herself. That's why Edward and Aro were shocked by how extensive her protection had become. over a year ago
