Depending on the sport, however, most sports where this question would come up, I think they should be segregated. Men are physically stronger than women more often than not. Martial Arts being a good example. During regular class where it was just practice, guys and girls would be paired up together. But in black belt testing, when you had to give it your all against an opponent, you had to be paired up with another woman, and if there wasn't one available, you had to have a scheduled day to demonstrate your skills.
Now, you know and I know that in real life, you cannot decide who your opponent is but getting shoved around by someone twice your size does not help you learn. If the guys were to deliver a blow to a woman,she would probably get knocked over. But the good thing is, some of the instructors gave additional advice to the women in regards o self-defense techniques. They told us which moves would work for us, which of them wouldn't. It isn't submissive or weak to realize that women are not as strong physically....... we just have o play by a different set of rules ;)
