If this scenario happened on a show on TV I would say he likes her but doesn't want to be seen with her but in real life it could mean anything he could be joking with you to make you feel bad or he might really like you and what U herd of him telling your friend was a lie

for me that would either be,
He likes you a bit.. but likes yuur freind more..
Or like..
He does like you.. or maybe is like.. emmbarrased to admit it..

but i think he has a crush on you too,.coz he would never say he doesnt like u to his friend and for not telling you if he has'nt a crush on you,.

sometimes guys get scared when surrounded by friends if the girl he likes... face it girls can be mean and scary, he tells them one thing to keep out of their radar and tells them not to tell the girl so she doesnt get mixed readings... little does he know girls use that as leverage, during a fight mostly..
