advice on believes

amazondebs posted on Feb 26, 2008 at 07:29PM
i was talking to another fan the other day about my believes, and he said that he was confused about his own
i gave my advice on the matter and told him about the advice spot so he could get other peoples advice and opinions too and he asked me to post his problem on a forum for him as he did not feel like he could do it himself

anyways he believes there is a god or higher beings for his own reasons, he had done a fair bit of research in to the 6 main religions, wiccan believes and a couple of smaller religions but he does not know where his believes lie religious wise, he believes that any higher being{s} should be worshiped and acknowledged but he does not know to go about as he does not know what to believe

i wouldnt call myself religious..but spiritual. meaning that i- like many others- have my "own" belief thats not necessarily bound to one group or organization. i normally go by what feels right to me. so i dont really have any experience looking for a religion...but i can relate to the confusion ;)

Nobody can answer that for him. NOBODY.

This is one of those things he has to decide for himself. The only valid advice is: Keep Questioning and researching.

i don't think he's so much looking for somone to say, you should believe this. I think he's wanting a way to decide where he lies, which like i said i guess research or experimenting is the only way to do it

Nobody needs to have a solid, specific way of looking at things. And if he really doesn't know where he stands, he probably doesn't have one himself. He could be agnostic, or be some mix of different religions. He can even have his own sort of religion; if he's going to pray alone he can believe whatever he wants.

The only advice I can proffer is to choose one (perhaps one that intrigues him or which impresses him by how the faith plays out in others) and then try it out. That is to say, you can't explore a spiritual faith without "trying it out" as if it were true. Different faiths make different claims about how one's life will be affected as an adherent, and there's only two ways to test that: by observing others, and by empirical experimentation: how does it work for you.

It may be belaboring the point, but one is never going to experience a faith without trying to experience it. That said, you can't expect good results with any endeavor without commitment to the endeavor. Thus my recommendation:

1) Choose a faith
2) Research what it means to have that faith and to practice that faith.
3) Practice the faith for a set period as if it were completely true.
4) Evaluate your experience: did the faith play out as it presented itself?

Of course, I would recommend that the period you choose be long enough for sufficient data collection. A day is probably too short (sounds somewhat capricious, too): one or more months is probably better to experience the fullness of whichever faith is attempted.

As for the research, start with the texts (if there are any for the faith of your choice), then scholars or clergy of that faith, then regular practitioners of the faith. Some faiths also have courses for the inquisitive that you can attend. It is important to keep in mind that everybody brings their own baggage to everything, including a faith, so talking to more people than just your friends/relatives/acquaintances who may practice the faith is important to get a deeper understanding of what a faith is about beyond the religious (ie ritualistic) aspects.
