I was in a freakishly similar situation about a month ago. Although luckily, I still live with my mother, so I had to tell her that she couldn't come stay with me. <insert sigh of relief> I try to shy away from giving advice, for fear of digging my own grave.
And Pinkish, I think that talking and having someone listen is completely different from asking for advice. It's a lot harder to hang yourself if you're just a listener.

I think your pov is applicable to certain cases, but not all... I think that there are certain limits to the number of advices we would give someone. There are some folks who apparently think of their friends as advice-mills and they usually are the ones who ask and yet don't listen even if their lives are flushing right below them.
