American Idol Season 8 Episode 34
Who Will Get The Shock Tonight? Review by Connie Norberg

The tension of tonight’s show was undoubtedly shocking! The Top 5 contestants, Kris Allen, Danny Gokey, Allison Iraheta, Adam Lambert and Matt Giraud open the show with a song called, “I’ve Got Rhythm” and get the crowd pumped for the reveal. Then Ryan Seacrest announces that Allison Iraheta’s birthday was Monday April 27 and Danny Gokey’s birthday was Friday April 24. So in celebration, the contestants decided to bake birthday cakes over the last weekend. It began as a fun-loving team effort. Then it slowly began to get dirty. A food fight came shortly after a small spill and eventually leads to a huge mess all over the American Idol Mansion’s kitchen. However, they all seemed to be having a blast while each of them were covered in a messy flour and egg topping.

As the show carries on, Ryan Seacrest offers up a “Birthday Gift” to Danny Gokey. As Danny Gokey opens the envelope, he reads aloud, “$6,000 Cleaning Bill” so he turned to Ryan Seacrest...

American Idol Episode 33 Season 8 - The Remaining Five...rm
review by Connie Norberg

This week on American Idol Season 8, the Top 5 Contestants heat things up with the Rat Pack Performances. Jamie Foxx (actor / comedian / singer) is their mentor this week. I thought Jamie Foxx was an outstanding choice for this week’s mentor with his impeccable talent and experience. I thought he really showed he cared for each and every one of the contestants’ performances.

So to kick things off, Kris Allen sings his heart out with a ballad, “The Way You Look Tonight” and gains approval from judges, Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Kara DioGuardi. Simon Cowell, on the other hand, was not as enthused as the rest, by commenting that he thought Kris’ performance was “Wet” but thought Kris’ performance was “Still good.” Ryan Seacrest tries to get Simon’s definition on what he meant by “Wet” but Simon’s only reply was “Not dry!”

So, we've just finished the performances from week two - "70s week" - of the 7th season of "American Idol". What I want to know is: what the hell is going on this season?? Usually I try to write even-handed articles, but today (28 February 2008) I'm going to get up on a soapbox and rant about this.

Granted, the issues I'm seeing aren't unique to this season...but I think they're more pronounced than they've ever been. I see the following problems, presented in no particular order:

Dichotomy between live and TV
This is an issue with any of the performance shows, even the generally superior Rock Star: what the people who are there live witness is totally different from what we watching at home do. For one thing, the live audience sees the whole performance, whereas those of us watching on TV see just what the camera shows us. So we often get close-ups rather than seeing the contestant dance or perform. That's fine, especially when, as with season 7 so far, the contestants seem constitutionally incapable of pulling off any moves.
