How do I love thee, Barbara? Let me count the ways.
Barbara Stanwyck is a legend. More than that she personifies what is womanly, mysterious, glorious, imaginative, beautiful, strong, enduring, endearing, powerful, magical, fun, optimistic in life and in theatre. Not one to display theatrics or uncontrolled emotions when accepting awards on stage in front of an audience, Barbara Stanwyck is a fine inspiration and role model for women.
I think women accepting Academy Awards, Golden Globes, or other 'gongs' today should look at a video of Barbara before they go to any award ceremony. These women would know how to act after seeing Barbara handle these emotional moments onstage.
Ms Stanwyck's longevity in the movie industry speaks volumes. Thank God the fans have these movies because she chose not to write one of those scandalous expose type novels about showbiz people she knew. Her classiness and strong ethics shine through 6 decades of motion pictures instead of on the pages of a bestseller, which her book certainly would have been.
She was disciplined - always in remarkable good shape. She was magnificent. I wish I could have met her once in person. I wish I had a grave to visit, but Barbara's ashes are scattered in her favorite place Lone Pine, California.
She left this world in 1990 at age 82 when, at a hospital in Santa Monica she succumbed to congestive heart failure caused by pneumonia and emphysema. If only the lure of cigarette smoke was not so prevalent in those sultry films noir, perhaps her passing may have been an easier one but I can't blame her. Everyone smoked in those days. I only can hope someone was by her side when she took those last breaths. I am with her in spirit.
I want to visit Lone Pine, California. I want to breathe that air where Barbara's ashes floated to the ground. For now, dear Ms Ruby Catherine Stevens I am content to have you as my inspiration - for now and always. See you at the movies.
