What I Like About...Beverly Hills

I think that Beverly Hills 90210 is a show everyone has at least heard of once or twice, but unless you were a teenager during the 90s, you probbaly never watched it. Well, the same was true for me.

That is, until CW started advertising the 90210 spin-off on every cable channel they possibly could. I heard stuff on the previews like, "the phenomenon that defined an era is back to touch a whole new generation of viewers." It sounded like a show I couldn't pass up. But there was one little problem: I knew nothing about 90210 besides the obvious - it's a zip-code in Beverly Hills.

What initially opened my eyes to this hidden gem of a drama is my fan loyalty to Jennie Garth. What I Like About You is one of my favorite TV shows of all time, and it happened to be during a re-run of WILAY that I first saw a preview for 90210. The blonde hair caught my attention right away; she looked so familiar...Wait a minute...Is that Val Tyler on my television screen? What would she be doing in Los Angeles? No, it's not Val - it just looks like her. No, it is; it's Jennie Garth!

Bits and pieces I had heard about BH 90210 suddenly fit. Kelly Taylor gave Jennie her shot at stardom. Kelly Taylor must be reprising her roll on the spin-off. That was all I needed to dig up the 1990-aired pilot on YouTube.

At first, I just wanted to gain a little background knowledge on the original West Beverly crew before I watched CW's updated version, but instead I got hooked. On both shows actually - the old and the new. However, I never imagined I would enjoy a soap-opera from another decade more than an OC-type drama aimed at my own age-group. BH 90210 is for the twenty-somethings; 90210 is for me. But I fell for what wasn't meant to be mine.

Don't get me wrong, every Tuesday night I eagerly tune into Annie and Dixon's high school intrigues. However, I always find myself comparing their lives to those of their predessors: Brenda and Brandon Walsh. What can I say? Maybe I'm just a sucker for old-school television.

I freely admit it; in fact I'll embrace it!
