Vince McVicar killed her. It was reveled in "The woman in limbo" the final episode of season one. He was a pig farmer who performed 'hits'(Murders) for the bank robbing gang that Ruth and Max were a part of. McVicar was later killed by a man in prison, who Max had told to murder him!
