Seeing as you liked Jane Eyre, do NOT make the same mistake as I did and try reading 'Villette'. It is the longest book of nothing that I have ever read, and to top it off, a lot of the conversation are in (Victorian) French! After reading this I'm now a little wary of reading 'Shirley'. Mrs Gaskell's 'Mary Barton' was really good. Also, I find Thomas Hardy a good read, although his novels are usually tragic, so people are quite hesitant. But even still, I firmly recommend 'Tess of the D'Urbervilles'.
