Would you pick this over something else?

While not necessarily limited to the Christmas holiday, White Elephant Gift Exchanges are popular at this time of year for clubs, associations, small groups, churches and offices around the United States. It is often a more affordable (and, possibly, fun) alternative to buying presents for everyone in the group. But what is a White Elephant Gift Exchange?

The history
The story - almost certainly apocryphal - goes like this: in pre-colonial India, the rajahs would give gifts to their vassals as tokens of their esteem. Chief among these was the elephant. The elephant was both vehicle and beast of burden, a creature you could both ride to war and use to haul large weights, take goods to market, perform demolition, and the like. Essentially, the elephant was an extremely valuable creature. But a white elephant was considered sacred, and could not be put to work. So a rajah would be bestowing a great honor to a vassal by giving him a white elephant, while at the same time giving the vassal a rather huge burden. (11/29/07 Update: I've posted a new Christmas video list for 2007 - Check it out when you have a chance!)

Ahh Christmas. The tree, the stockings, the mistletoe and - of course - the holiday television programming.

Some of my fondest Christmas memories were spent in front a of television watching such classics as the animated Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer or one of the myriad versions of Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol'.

So without further ado, I am presenting you with my big, big list of holiday specials. I've tried to categorize the list into subsections to make it a little more bearable and consumable. The list is in no particular order, though the first section, 'essentials', are (in my humble opinion) the cream of the crop. I should also note that I've only included programs for which I was able to find online videos so you'll notice some glaring omissions (like 'A Christmas Story' and 'Miracle on 34th Street).

Back when I was a kid watching Christmas specials on TV, Mrs. Claus was invariably portrayed as a sweet but dowdy older woman of slightly plump stature. She could cook a mean pie and reminded you of your Grandma. Of course, we loved her and so did Santa.

But did you ever wonder what Mrs. Claus might have looked like when she was younger? I mean, I assume she must've be smokin' (natch).

So why is it that so many of the classic holiday programs show us a Santa Claus surrounded by androgynous little elves and a matronly Mrs. Claus? I mean, it's cold up at the North Pole. Surely Santa isn't adverse to surrounding himself with some helpers who are easy on the eye and can get the ol' temperature up.

Thankfully, modern television has mostly solved this problem. Not only is the modern day Mrs. Claus hotter than her predecessors, but Santa's other helpers have also gotten an upgrade in the youth and sexiness categories. So here are some Christmas babes likely to increase the the blood boiling on any elf, reindeer or fat bearded guys with a penchant for red robes.
