The first one was slow and plodding, the third one was a glorified car wreck (in every sense of the word), the second, however, is one of the best quasi-cyperpunk films there has ever been.
Terminator 2 only works because of the first movie; the things that are cool/well done about the second film build upon what was established in the first one: Sarah's transformation, her terror of the T-100, John's upbringing and amoral attitude about societal norms. T3 was a mess, true: the movie should have taken place in the future with John as an adult (to connect back with the first film) and instead we get him as a youth who has completely forgotten his whole character from T2, but the ending was pretty cool for all that.
"Terminator" is the only film able to stand on its own.

The third one is the only one that i have seen and I thought that it stood on its own fine. I was able to follow it anyway
