i have always been good at writing, its my natural strength and my teachers had praised me for it, but one type of writing i had never thought much about was poetry, it was "boring" then alittle over a year ago my local library had a poetry contest for teens and i decided to enter....didn't win, but that first sparked my love of writing poetry. i cannot just sit down at a random moment and start writing, if i do wat i produce is boring and dry, i can only write when i currently have a strong emotion about something, for example i often write after i have listened to music, watched movies, or had some sort of drama in my life. my poems are my best friends whom i can tell anything, its how i get through things. so, lately there was another poetry contest at my library, i decided to enter. the theme was imagine a world where... apperently it was good because it was then published in the library magazine. i am not a famous poet, tho someday i hope to be. i am just a teen girl who loves to write and share her creations. here is the poem i wrote for the contest that got published, wat do u think????

On the beach I lie
Staring at the waves
Glad they’re always there
Or are they?
Suddenly I’m not sure
Is it an illusion?
And then in an instant…

People are gone
Waves are higher
Dolphins fly
And serpents appear
The word shifts…
Fairies pop out
To show their little faces
Nymph’s swarm around me
Creatures crawl out of the sand
And then they all stop
Waiting for me
I hear them chanting…
Imagine
Imagine
Imagine…
And all will be mine
Is it true?
Or a dream?
I wonder?

I blink
What was that?
What happened?
A vision?
Or a dream?
Where was I?
Were they right?
And then I lie back down
Deciding to try
To join that mysterious place
And
Imagine a World Where…

I love that you love writing. Now I will make a quiet request of you: When expressing your love for writing in my favorite language, please respect grammatical and mechanical protocol. As a writer, I'm sure you understand the blight of chat speak on our beloved written language. You had a lovely introduction to your poem, which would have been made even lovelier if you'd have said "what do you think?" rather than "wat do u think???"

As for the poem itself-- marvelous. I am always excited to see young people writing--and especially reading--poetry, as I feel it is a floundering art in this brave new world of iPods and short attention spans.

I like the repetition of "imagine" in the second stanza, and the capitalization of the last line. It acts almost as an alternative title, and you leave it open to one's own interpretation of a perfect world. The tone is reminiscent of Lennon's famous piece "Imagine" (do you know it?) in which he describes his perfect world. I like also how you captured the permanence and impermanence of the ocean, and how illusory that is.

If you want me to give you advice on how to work on effective use of language and powerful poetry, just give a holler, and I'll help you work on your pieces.
