STOP STEALING!
This was originally posted in the One Tree Hill spot but a user asked that it be posted here as well. I post a lot of things to Fanpop, especially images. Something that in my opinion is very important, is giving credit where it is due. If you find something on the web and want to share it, then feel free to post it. However, it is extremely disrespectful to claim that you created that content if you didn`t or simply not bother to credit.

Lately I`ve been coming across a lot of images of say a celebrity where the user who uploaded the picture, gives themselves credit. It is certainly possible that you snapped that picture but when the said photo is tagged, then it is not yours to claim. This is a perfect example of proper image credit. I am specifically showing you where I got that image. This is a terrible example of how to give credit. This user claims that they made that screencap but you can clearly see Hilarie Burton`s website on the right hand corner. I wasn`t going to call anyone out but this needs to stop! I will report every single user who I see doing this. How hard is it to copy and paste a url? Putting that you got something from "live journal" or "somewhere on the internet" is not proper credit. Stop being lazy and give proper credit. Did you know that if the creators of the things you are claiming are yours want, they can take legal action? People spend a lot time creating the things we post so give them recognition!

Gah I can't stand when people just put "LiveJournal" as the credit! >:( A lot of times I like to go to LJ and see other stuff the user has created if I like the icons. Bleh. I always credit is as: [username] @ LJ. A lot of times if you copy/paste the URL it gets chopped off.

I agree though - people need to start crediting things properly! It doesn't take that much time.

I try my best to credit the images i find. At times it's hard to really find the person who created the image.

When an image has a clear tag on the photo though, i consider that as a way to credit the person correctly. It think it looks a bit weird to put the credit when it's already on the image. But I will start doing it now, thanks for sharing =].

I completely agree with this. Crediting where crediting is due is really important and people's work should be respected. Like smoore23 said (as i also post lots of images from livejournal) i too tend to put "username @ LJ" instead of the whole url just because then it's easier to see the whole thing. :)

Even a blank credit is better than crediting yourself for something you didn't make... UGH. I hate that.

Edit: And your terrible credit example's been removed XD

Actually, you also shouldn't credit the community the icon was posted in. You should credit the actual user who made the icons and posted them in that community. Just a heads up from an LJ icon maker :)

Unless of course, the icon maker asks you to credit the LJ community, which happens sometimes. Plus, there will be people that argue that even crediting the icon maker is wrong because, for example, if I make an icon from 'House MD', the image actually belongs to Fox, so "Fox" is the image credit, regardless of who edits the image to make an icon.

The point of my rambling answer is that we all have our own ideas about what "correct" image crediting is, but you are totally right about people who blatantly claim other people's work as there own. I think it is ignorance, rather than maliciousness, but either way, it needs to stop.

the problem with posting a url is that it gets cut off because its too long.
this is all i see on the "perfect example":

in my opinion you should always take the time to write a credit and then maybe put livejournal and other info that didnt fit in the credit in the description.

G'day Myra, when I first saw this in my updates I got a real super bizarre sense of deja vu! I've been sick in bed for 4 days and am still unwell and I thought maybe I was losing the plot here. Had I not seen this article before? Had I maybe dreamed about this article and telepathically encouraged you to write it? Or was I just going nuts? Hell, nothing so profound as any of the above. Just a mere case of you submitting article to a different spot, lol.
Anyway, you know my feelings on this topic, I've already made my comments on same article in the OTH spot so I won't repeat them again here.
I did however leave some comments for the "terrible example" user when I rated her content. Maybe if enough people explain it to her, she'll get the drill about image crediting.
Btw, that baby is still breaking my heart!
