I know you folks are tired of hearing about crediting images. I'm not here to beat that into your head yet again. I've already done that... and I continue to do it in comments on your images when you forget.

No. This time I am here to give you a helpful tip. A lot of you have paid attention and are now putting a credit on your images. Thank you for that! The problem now is a lack of film knowledge, which is very forgivable.

You see, when it comes to movies, forget what I said earlier about crediting the website you got the image from if you can't find the actual owner of the image. With movies, that goes out the window.

You see, when it comes to movie stills, the original Studio retains the rights to all images from the movie.

Don't start groaning. This actually makes things easier for you! I promise!

That's all ya need. Oh not as a credit, but as the number one resource for finding which studio owns the rights to the movie (and the screen shots.)

No more having to copy and paste numerous websites during your mad screenshot spree. Just go to IMDB and look up the studio that released the film. Bam. Done. That credit goes on all those images.

Now obviously if a shot has been artistically altered then yeah keep putting who altered it... I think.

Me, I try to go with the studio when in doubt. They are the ones with the big legal guns who could cause problems for Fanpop in the future... and likely the person over on Facebook or Myspace who put cute little words on those images did not get the Studio's permission to do so. It's just safer from a legal standpoint to always credit the studio ;)

There. That wasn't so painful, now was it?

The same thing should also apply when uploading video game screenshots or artwork. I always try and credit either the game company, or the website (such as Kingdom Hearts Wiki) where I find the image or artwork, which will have a link (as well as the usual one in the spot) to where the image came from.

On altered images, I think the credit of 'StudioName/Alterer' would be suitable.

Great soapbox article Devience. :-)

Ahhh case in point:

There is a mess about to brew in the OCC spot (Orange County Choppers) over unauthorized use of copyrighted images... They have found the spot and are not happy that the images have not been properly credited, nor was permission to use them asked.

That could have easily been avoided. I stepped in and hopefully they'll accept what I said to them... but they could very well demand that every image in that Spot be removed.

Thank you for this! 90% of the images I add are How I Met Your Mother images and that is so simple! Muchas gracias.

I think it's the same with TV shows too, right?
I didn't really know anything about crediting until Debs pointed it out to me, and now I try to credit as best as I can.

This doesn't really have anything to do with movies, but what if I find a picture from a website that I want to use, but the website doesn't credit the image? (And the website most likely doesn't own the image)

Yes. Same with TV shows.

As to your uncredited website issue, Cite their full URL as the source. That puts the hot potato back in their lap ;>

This stands for screencaps and other photos but wallpapers, fanart, sketches, icons and the ilk are all considered fair use and therefore do not need to credit the original owner only the creator of the derivative.
