Why I Think Fanpop Is Superior To Almost Every Other Fansite, Social Networking Website Around

The Fanpop website has been around for quite a few years now- 3 years in fact, and whilst it is still relatively unknown compared to the likes of Myspace, Facebook and the so-called phenomenon known as Twitter, it is still for me THE website that I pay a visit to on a regular basis.

Created by Dave Lu, David Papendrew, Cliff Szu and Michael Chu in America 3 years ago, Fanpop was formerly a small relatively unknown website, whose number of members have grown, month by month, year by year.

With features such as uploading images, submitting website links to other articles and You Tube videos to writing articles, opinion pieces and posting your works of art and creating trivia questions, Fanpop is so user friendly, it aims to give all of us users the opportunity to contribute, rate, to gain recognition for what we do, as well as to have fun.

This has been labelled as a social networking site, alongside Myspace, Facebook, Twitter- yet it also doubles up as a fansite too. Let's face it, have you ever visited other fan sites for your favourite hobbies, interests, TV shows, actors, looked at what is on offer and thought: 'hang on for a second, I can do better than that'- yet you do not know a thing about creating a fansite? Especially as you have to learn HTML jargon and Dreamweaver for example?

Well, on Fanpop, you can do what you've always wanted to do on here, which you never had the opportunity to do whatsoever, and with ease.

Being one of the writers of Michael Urie Online fansite myself, whilst I can type up and post my articles, I cannot post photos, icons, fan art in the gallery on the site- therefore, I post a few images and provide the link to the Michael Urie Club so that other fans can follow it and see the photos, screencaps, fan art etc themselves. As a result, they all receive a good number of 'views' on there. And so in that respect, having the Michael Urie club on here to promote the pics etc to the fans-especially those who are not members of the club, has been very useful.

One of the best things about this website is that it mentions that everyone gets to contribute images, links, articles etc. Therefore, it is more of a team effort, unlike general fansites where you have just the moderator/site creator and owner/webmaster or mistress, if you are female and they do all the work. This is also an excellent idea because speaking as a fan of other TV shows, actors, I have been on many fansites and often I notice that he/she does not regularly update the content of the site.

And fans do notice straight away after a few months whether or not the site has been updated.

An example of this is the 'Ugly is In' Ugly Betty fan site(which has coincidently enough dissapeared for good, recently). Being an Ugly Betty fan, for months I noticed that the forum was littered with spam and irrelevant postings, which had nothing to do with the show, and that the photo gallery had not been updated. As the months went by, nothing had changed. It was only just 2 weeks ago I noticed that it was gone because when I tried typing in the URL link, I got a message saying that the site had been sold. Alas, there was no message prior to that and so I was unaware that it was going to happen.

Oh well. That is one example of how one should NOT run a website. Thankfully for Fanpop, I can post my photos, news and other content on the Ugly Betty club as well as others, and let the fans know what is going on with regards to the show and actors, on a regular basis.

I would, for one, would like to suggest a few additions to the Fanpop site that would make it more fun, accessible and gain even more users and visitors in the long run.

Likewise:

For the person who contributes the most content on one spot to be allowed to change the Icon and banner, say once, every year- but only if the original creator of the club has been 'inactive' from the spot for more than 2 years. In other words, if the creator has not been submitting links, images etc within that period of time.

2) To create/customise and add a background to our profiles- of course, this isn't Myspace, but I think it would be great if we could distinguish each other's user profiles this way. Plus, it would make it more attractive looking and appealing.

3) I also think that it would be good to have say one regular sized photo on the main page to represent the club and as a way of promoting it to the other users and fans.

4) As well as medals for dedicated and die hard fans for example, there should be an added logo/symbol, which denotes the spots where he/she has made the most contributions overall in terms of links, images, picks etc on the clubs they have joined. Likewise, if you look at my profile for example, you will notice that I have submitted more images to the Michael Urie club than any other. Even though I have yet to receive a single medal for it.

But other than that, Fanpop is still an excellent site- it is so much fun being on here and getting to know other people who share the same interests and tastes in music, TV, actors as yourself. Plus, it is easier to find people who are into the same things that you are into and discuss it with them. No matter what your age or where you are from, it is easier to get yourself heard, by contributing and taking part.

Fanpop is definitely the next best thing- shame though it is not as appreciated and well known as Twitter, Facebook and by many celebrities, as well as in the media. Because if I were a celebrity and had known that there was a spot created by someone else based on me or a TV show I was on for instance, I would definitely check it out.

I am so glad that I found Fanpop- I just hope it remains online for years to come. Thanks so much Dave and co- you have indeed made fan site building so much easier:)!

oh and I almost forgot to mention, I have tried Facebook, Myspace but I felt that they just weren't for me. From a visual sense, almost all of them look the same and they had too much text and not enough pictures and images on screen. By being on Fanpop, not only have I gained so many fans, but that I could do so many things that I would/wouldn't be able to do on Facebook etc. And like some people, I don't feel like posting my real photo on there, because, well why should I?
