Bulk posting kills keywords

Okay this soapbox sadly, is going to point fingers so people can learn from this. I don't like having to point fingers but it seems no one gets the message across if it isn't done.

What is bulk posting? It's when you post multiple things all at the same time. So when you do that the keywords you give are going to be the same for every single thing you post.

Why do people bulk post? Well the excuse used can be "I want to share great content with others" but really it turns more into a quantity over quality.

Why is this harming keywords? When people bulk post they only put a general amount of keywords in that can sum up all icons but not put specifics to them.

Now onto showing you an example of how this is. This is only one example, from one spot, from one user. It happens on pretty much ALL spots though and from different users.

The Office Spot Icons

This whole spot in general I would say is a breeding ground of misused keywords (or none at all) and bulk posting.

Goodbye, Toby

keywords: the office, season 4, episode 14, icon

keywords you should use though in an image like this is:
who's in it? Dwight and Mose
additional things in it? Raccoon
episode name? Goodbye, Toby

Saying who is in the icon in your keywords is one of the most important things you could do. People don't just go and look for icons of season 4, they want to find a specific character they like easily.

Please remember this was not to attack anyone, it was to present a clear example of what should be done and the best way I can do that is through something that has happened.

I am on the fence on this one. In one way this is saying that bulk posting is bad, I know. In the Office spot I posted 3 pictures about the Dwight Schrute for Vice-President campaign, I was hoping to get some great comments, but then someone put about 80 pictures after that and now it is likly no one will ever see these images again. In another way, this soapbox is giving me the impression I am getting from this article is that all bulk posting is bad, which I don't agree with. For example, I have posted about 300 videos in the Madtv section (some in bulks). This article is saying that what I have been doing is bad, and I don't like that because I love posting video's in that section.

:\ you can't "bulk post" videos...i mean when you multi-upload/bulk post images (so normal members 10 and i think it's different for dedicated members) so every keyword you add is the same for every image

thats why when i post images (not very often) i only post one or two, or if i find a website with loads of images i post the link. savign everyone some time! ♥

:) another way to bulk but still keyword good is if you're bulk posting icons for example, group them all in sections of character and post that way, may take longer but people appreciate effort

When I have a bunch of new stuff to add to a spot, most of the time I'll add them picture by picture but sometimes I bulk-post and then edit them once they are all posted (saves a lot of uploading time).

okay i don't normally give 5 stars to a article this short but hurray hurray hurray
i completley agree with this, okay this may sound sad to you all but i don't care. When i want to go on a image spree which is normally buffy i actually will put them in to folder section when saving them so i can upload them as different characters which might take a bit more time (not much though maybe 5 or 10 mins extra) and then someone else goes and uploads loads of icons simply with the words "buffy, icon" it leaves me not very impressed or

even worse (not sure if you want to point this out in your soap snerkie, maybe if you can phrase it better lol) is when people upload loads of different characters and put in all the characters and keywords together so you might get a image of willow with the keyword xander in it, not helpful!
oh and another thing (sorry guys) this "<3" is not a keyword! neither is "the"

a couple of brilliant image uploaders in my opinion are cinders and saul_mikoliuas as they even sometimes put in a fair bit of information about their image description if there's anything to say

It just makes sense to use keywords that are DIRECTLY related to what you are posting... I've only now realised this kind of thing was going on. Great soapbox, good points!

so you might get a image of willow with the keyword xander in it

Bingo! I have down-rated a ton of images this week for that very thing.

I always go back and look at each image I load and make sure the keywords are correct, and add or subtract as needed.

Awww Debsacles thank you =( However I feel I must mention something. My computer takes twice as long to load images as it does to do evertyhing else so I often add about 10 icons and then edit them to add the correct things. For example I will add them all with the correct credit and the Title and keywords related to every icon (Normally Himym, How I met Your Mother, icon) and then go into everyone and individually add who is in it etc. I know this takes longer so some people don't like it but it really helps the search engine. That's why if someone has just added them, I give them time to see if they are going to edit them or not.

Although I confused DrD when I added an image with the keywords Sarah, Marshall and it was a picture of Jason Segel....only in the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall =D

I had one more point to make but I've forgotten it. I'll be back!

yup sualey is awesome :)her descriptions are legendary.. wait for it..dary!(especially her typos ;P)

problem is: how many people are going to read this and change their ways!? like i said before: ive seen the fanpop four post content that doesnt meet these standards...and if you leave comments most users will just start insulting you ( sualey was called picture police for pointing oot miscategorized content- i think that was meant to be insulting i found it funny :D)
the cool fans ( who normally have excellent credits and keywords anyway) will thank you for pointing something oot that they forgot to edit- oh what to do what to do..searching on this site for content drives me nuts but i dont think it will change anytime soon!

I think bulk posting is good...depending on what you're posting and if the keywords CAN be applied to every image withe enough detail. I mean, if you're posting a tons of frames nearly identical to each other from a scene of a show or movie, that's pretty much a waste of space if you ask me. It can be used for the better, though, and saving a lot of time.

My solution to bulk posting? I post in bulk, then go back and correct each one individually. And then I do a happy Snoopy dance. Can I have my free juice box now?

yeah i get what you mean about screen captures if there all from a screen capture website, why not just post a link? if they are good credit and keyworded i won't rate them low but i probably won't go through them all, too tedious
but sometime i post screen captures or use screen captures from new episodes of shows for fan art and icons so they can be useful but if there all on one site like screen caps paradise then just link
although having said that i'd rather have proper credited keyworded screen caps than loads of different photos without lol

I commend you for writing this, Snerkie. I've noticed the exact same thing on numerous spots, but especially on The Office.

And DrD - I noticed the exact same thing about the featured vids! Grrr... What makes them 'featured', anyway?

I agree with you and feel guilty!
but after a House md episode is aired I download it(in order to watch it) and then post many screen caps!but they are about 200(because I want everyone who wants a certain moment of the show to find it)
You can understand that it is impossible to post 200 screen caps one by one
What should I do?Stop posting them?I know people at least use them as I see a lot of my photos in many picks

just look through them and see if you can group them a bit. Like go through the scenes since there might be 2 characters in a lot of the caps so you can upload them then upload another batch :) it's good when people post the caps and very appreciated just not easy to sort through sometimes

excellent article I have it saved, this to bothers me as on almost all of my spots the keywords don't match the pictures and when you have lee pace, anna friel, and such for a picture of kristen chenowth that bothers me how are you suppose to find it, that is just an example but this is on most of my spots.

thank you for writing it.

Mimi - to be blunt about it, if you don't care enough to do it right, then don't do it all.

The ability to upload more than 5 at a time needs to be taken away ASAP.

I think bulk posting is all right. I didn't know specific keywords were such a big deal with everyone. I'll do better now, and thanks for pointing out that one can go back and individually edit the keywords. I personally believe that multi-uploading should not be taken away. I don't think I'm going to sit and upload stuff one by one. I'll just go back and edit keywords. Good article!

thanks :) yeah you can go back and edit any keywords (you can't re-upload the image though) Keywords are helpful when people want a specific image for whatever purpose and sometimes from a specific episode so they can show someone something or make an icon with a quote, etc.

I think that we should make some sort of deal about that bulk posting. If one person doesn't add many keywords where they should, they should be taken away the ability. So you could kinda report users for not adding the necessary keywords. I think it's okay to add many pictures of landscapes without putting in the link "tree" once in a while but if it's pictures of an important building and the only keyword is the name of the city where it is, then it's not alright.

Hello I'm new here.

I uploaded new spots for Marianna Palka, Christine Jeffs & Debra Searle. Go look at them. I also added some new pictures to the Elizabeth Reaser spot.

Also I bulk uploaded BUT I did put batch keywords but only relevant ones like: marianna palka, marianna, palka, puffy vest, bubble vest

The reason for that was that in every picture was Marianna Palka and she was wearing a puffy vest in every picture.

But I would never upload a picture of more than one person and then only keyword one person, instead I'd keyword all the people in the picture if I knew who they all were.

I remembered my point!! I don't think the ability to upload more than 5 at a time should be taken away. I often upload photos of say Cobie SMulders at an awards event and there are often 15 pictures of her making funny faces and they are all the same event and they are all her so I can put the exact same keywords for every one. I just think that they should give people an option, put the right keywords or it gets deleted. However that would be too much work for the fanpop four and I think they have neough on their hands.

I think they should take away and block future medals when proper keywording is not being used.
