how to and how not to advertise your spot
|
||
okay straight down to buisness, frankly I dislike picks saying "will you join this spot" or messages from people advertising sites and spots. If people have a real interest in the spot they will find it themselves, same goes for websites but i understand that there's no point to a spot if your the only member and you have no one to talk about your passion with and since we're all one big fanpop family the more of us the merrier a spot generally is, so rather than whining about it i have decided to offer up some solutions. Although the annoying person with in me still feels the need to put in some 'don't' but i promise not to go on too long :D I will try and say what i do want to see and will give props if i see people actually taking this advice on board firstly before i start, the big no, no, please don't send people messages advertising spots and sites, it’s annoying and I’m sure everyone wants a spam free fanpop links The most obvious way to advertise a spot or website is to put some links up, i think three is the most can you can put up of the same link (rightly so) so use them wisely, the best way to do this is not to put them in unrelated, popular spots like fanpop but to put them in different related spots, e.g. if you had made a spot for a tv character, it has no relation to fanpop so don't link it to fanpop (this is technically miscategorized) instead why not put a link to the show iself, a link to the spot of the actor/actress who plays that character, you don't necessarily have to put as many as you can but I guess if you really wanted to you could then put a link to a popular couple they are involved in picks another big no, no for me is the "will you join the so and so spot" pick, there really is no point to these picks, they are not opinionated and won't get anymore advertising than links, just more comments, again they're annoying and spammy the reason why people like picks so much is to state their opinion and so creating a none opinion pick will not draw in the interest, interesting picks will draw in interest e.g. if i were to create a spot for the brilliant dave lui i could ask in the fanpop users spot "what's your favorite thing about dave" and then put a link in the comments or again in the fanpop users spot "who’s the hottest fanpop member?" and then pick dave and say something like "that's why i created the dave spot" and then link, it's easy standard pick stuff or if you want you can get really creative and slip it in anywhere e.g. you could ask in the picks spot "your isolated in the woods and only have a enough mag...n?" then pick dave and link the same aspect can be applied to tv characters or anything e.g. i created the spot for the show dollhouse (oh yes i'm even advertising right now, i'm that good ;p) and even though it has not come out yet i could ask in the television spot "which new show are you most looking forward to coming out?" and then link or in the amy acker spot "which amy acker co star did you like best" then pick eliza dushku and say "i'm looking forward to seeing them together again in the new show dollhouse" and then link articles okay now i really don't want to see article and forums saying "you should join the dave lu spot because it's awesome" that's not a article! and not really a forum what you could do is write a article about your passion e.g. if you created a spot for pigeon racing you could write a article about your own achievements in the sport and put in some images with you and the pigeons in the fanpop users spot and then as always put a link below Of for a show if created a spot of one couple vs. another couple, you could write a article comparing the couples and then link other little tips and bits If your really struggling for fans here’s a few other tips -you could put a link to the spot under ‘websites’ on your profile page -you could say something about your passion in your motto on your profile page -you could use a avatar/icon of your passion -there are loads of forums about advertising including a forum to mention all the spots you have made or one to advertise your spot -you could ever try bribing us by saying it contains picture of john in his chaps -the more pop quiz questions you ask the better chance you have of people coming across them in the 'super quiz' Finally THE NUMBER ONE way to get more fans on to a spot is to add loads of brilliant, amazing content Images on the front page, forums on the front page, picks on the front page, pop quizzes on the front page will all be noticed, even better if you add some brilliant videos or articles and have them featured okay that's my say and some ideas, don't use all of these that would be a bit excessive just pick a couple that you could do best :D EDIT:when i wrote this article there wasn't a dave spot but there now is so i guess this was a bit of advertisement for that too http://www.fanpop.com/spots/dave-ceo-of-fanpop/ |

*cough*
It was an excellent article, Debs, and I hope people actually take your suggestions - I'm sooo sick of shameless advertising in inappropriate places. ;)
One thing, though - you mention quizzes on the front page. I'm pretty sure that only quizzes from spots I'm already a fan of show up in my superquiz/front page. If the quiz from the spot seeking fans shows up, wouldn't that mean you're already a fan?
can anyone clear that up?
and lol i will check out dorothy
and yes mwa ha ha ha ha i win because i am all knowing lol
and i saw you advertising and i was thinking 'debs you are very sneaky!' and then you wrote, "(oh yes i'm even advertising right now, i'm that good ;p)" hehe
loved it, and i hope people take notice!
i always get scrubs quizzes on the front page ♥
crap and might have been fairly *cough* blunt in my responses!
We might have bent a few rules when we advertised the Fanpop's got talent spot..but generally i agree with you..as usual :)
Those picks are very annoying and seem to serve no purpose other than annoy other people! :)
People will join a spot if it's good - simple as!
I can't stand all these annoying spam picks!!!
It was a great article!!!
There is one user in particular who posted the same forum over and over and over in unrelated spots...lets just say I was not amused.
Also, I saw a question above about the frontpage module. It should only be pulling questions from spots you're a fan of when you are logged in. If you are logged out, it will give a questions from a broader range of categories.
Dazl, per the forum posting issue - if you can flag the user and add a note when you send the flag I can take care of the problem.
and can we report them picks as spam? *get excited* cause there's like 50 in the one tree hill spot i can report right now :D
*walks off to report mean spammy users*
Great job, and I hope you get through to all the people who do that ugly advertise spamming. :)
PS..Thank u
and your welcome :D
so glad i wrote this, now :D
Not only did the user spam a bunch of forums, they were also very rude about it too! Gr! I didn't know we could report people for that, so I'm going to report them now.
I'm also wondering if we can report picks like those as spam too.
That would be amazing.
Thanks for the article!
im recommending this article 2 every1 i speak 2 on fanpop!
Why is it that now more than ever before people are making the stupid "Join my spot" picks?
I saved this link, so that everytime I see I pick like that I give them this link.
Ugh, this is annoying.
and yeah i keep getting thhem message now so ironic lol
Thanks!
"If people have a real interest in the spot they will find it themselves". Not necessarily true. When I created the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon spot, hardly anyone joined until I told them aboot it. And when I did, they said they loved the movie, but I understand them not finding, because this movie came out before Fanpop was launched. And is that message saying "Will you join this spot I made" really all that bad? It takes less than 10 seconds to read that sentence/paragraph, and I you don't want to join, just delete the message. How harmful was that? (Picks I agree are "no no", because they aren't opinionated and such).
"Finally THE NUMBER ONE way to get more fans on to a spot is to add loads of brilliant, amazing content". Again, I think that's rather pointless if no one else is going to be there to help add things (especially when there might no be as much content to add).
But here's something else people can do to advertise spots: Make quizzes aboot them. I've seen probably half a dozen "Which spot did 'so and so' (not) create?" quizzes. It's brilliant to get the word out. And those are also featured every now and then. (Well, next to chel's million movies quiz questions i'd be hard though...)
But yes, good article debs blah blah blah, 5 star blah blah blah. ;)
touche my friend.....but surly a link from the movies spot would have grabbed movie fans attention
yes spam message are that bad because they are precisley that, spam, seriously a warning here, if you ever send me one i will start sending chain mails and adverts to you :P
as for adding the content, the only way to get content features on the page is to add it my dear friend, if you have a couple of raters it will get there, remeber many peopl often don't just check the front page but the lists and such as well
i believe i mentioned quizzed and such and thankyou for for my 5stars and my blah, blah, blahs ;P
I know where your coming from with the whole 'content' and 'front page' concept, but for spots like Howard Shore (which I just happened to create, add link from it to the movies spot, and it still isn't popular) there's not many things that can be put on it. But there are so many people with Howard Shore as their favorite musician on their profile. I've added almost everything there (except for dearheart's few banner's and icons).
Okay, the whole spam thing. If the letter merely reads: "I made the Howard Shore spot, will you join? Thanks!" then I agree it is spam. However, if you can tell the person is really into whatever they've made (on their profile, talks aboot it, etc) and the message is long-ish and it looked like it took time, then I wouldn't consider that spam. I really don't see a problem with advertising your spot in a way that would get a lot of people joining (and I know people do from experience. No it wasn't my message but I joined because of the message).
Now, *sends Howard shore advertisement message to debs* And you did mention the quiz thing. My bad.
EDIT: I just looked at the previous comments, and my ow cousin is a traitor! "Great job, and I hope you get through to all the people who do that ugly advertise spamming. :)" Good luck with that...
and lol your insane you know that, right? but as far as i am concerned if someone rights a message can be 10 pages long, if it's a message to multiple people advertising something, it's spam,
I am insane. Not much else I can say.
all the many many ways in which i said you could get people....I only mentioned two ways which generally annoy people.
so i'm a little confused as to how to how your confused
do you disagree and don't think anyone would join unless you send them a message or ask a pick? but i think most people join spot by seeing them in a passing comment, link or finding them themselves,
