So last night, August the 2nd/3rd, depending on where you were, I witnessed a phenomenon I have not seen on the internet for quite some time, I've seen glimmers of it, hints and comments, but I've not had it so blatantly thrust in my face until last night. I am, of course, talking about unity. No, not unity against a 'common enemy' or a 'troll' as many people on the internet assume is unity, but genuine "I can just click something to make someone feel a little better" kind of unity.

You see true believer, I have a faith in one thing, 'The small things count'. Whether it's just a passing 'hello', an easy to say 'I love you' or just clicking 'Give Props' here on Fanpop, it's a simple thing that can fill someone with a little bit of happiness. Last night I made a fair few picks in The Fanpop Spot, mostly I was bored, but I also, as always, wanted to see the results, and I wasn't surprised that a large amount of fans do add things, they do rate things, but most of all, they seem to like the community.

My best friend, as you will know him, is PkmnTrainerJ, I've known him for years, I can honestly say I think the only people who are closer even by the tiniest bit is Turk and JD from Scrubs, some would say that's worrying, I call it friendship, and while I've not and don't think I could ever make friends as good as J, there's certainly a lot of people here who remind me of him when I first spoke to him properly, kind, generous and above all, friendly.

The other day we noticed Con had finally returned after a lengthy absence, and we both laughed as if he'd finally returned from inside the Bermuda Triangle, we like him, we like the members, and it's important to both us and the community that he and everyone else sticks around.

So please remember, it doesn't take much just to say hi, it doesn't take much just to give props, it doesn't take much to rate someone's content (which will in turn get them that medal they have been after for so long), it doesn't take much to comment, to start a discussion, to get to know people, to add someone back, to just do the simple things people often forget to do, even saying thankyou or sorry when an argument arises.

Fanpop is a community, and a bloody good one at that, here's to another year, and many more after that :)

PS: Thankyou Dave, Papa, Cliff and Michael in no particular order for making Fanpop in the first place, as much as this place is about community, it wouldn't exist if you hadn't been inspired to do it and worked as hard at it as you do.

Nice one Benji. The sentiment is great. I got caught up in your fervor and created a collection of icons that capture the spirit of your soapbox. I'm taggin them as the Benji Fanpop Unity Collection in your honor ;-)

Awesome article Benji. Fanpop is really a friendly place. Creepy friendly. Like, they'll invite you over for dinner, and you'll never leave alive!!! (cue evil laughter) Bwahahaha! j/k =P In all seriousness, fanpop really is a great, supportive community. I feel like I get a self esteem boost whenever someone gives me a prop, sends me a message, etc. =)

Joined it! WOOO YEAH! I really like fanpop because everyone's so nice to me (huge change from life away from fanpop). The only downside is I'm probably not going to meet many of these people face to face
:(
