This doesn't apply to all of you and i respect everyones views, however i feel that some users just moan at any little change even if its good and some users saying they preferred fanpop beta. I know that there hasn't been much change but the users against change is the reason why.
Why do some users hate change? They think its against the 'spirit' of fanpop, they're scared that it will turn fanpop into myspace; Them reasons make me laugh. One, what the hell do you mean against the spirit! Fanpops not christmas. Two, how the hell could fanpop possible turn into myspace with all the awesome spots?

Emotes Are Fun & Useful
|
How can you not love the emotes? It makes it easier to see how the user are talking, it makes the comments more creative and there just fun. The speech bubble is good to, less boring then the comments before.
I'm sure this article will get a bad rating, but i just needed to say this.

5 star is awesome,lol!
I think change for fanpop is good, can often be fun, and is generally interesting. But change is not ALWAYS better, and users are free to disagree when they don't like a change.
For example, I don't like the speech bubbles because I feel like it interrupts the flow of the thread. Where I used to be able to read a thread of comments easily, my eye is now distracted by it. I did admit in the pick, though, that this could be because I'm an Oldbie, nostalgic for "the good old days" and resistant to new, scary, changes-- but seeing as for the most part I encourage Fanpop to stretch their legs, I feel I also have the right to speak up when they've done something I'm not necessarily super content with. It doesn't mean I care enough to go campaigning against the changes, or even to message the F4 about it. It's just one way to look at the new changes to the site.
I respect everyone who likes or doesn't like any specific change. It's their right, as users, after all. I don't think there is a single user on this site who hates Fanpop, or change in general.
"I miss Fanpop Beta all of the sudden! Hope it doesn't turn to MySpace!
"Change!! *hides head in hands*"
"It doesn't suit the Fanpop spirit at all in my opinion."
"I'm old and stuck in my ways. Change scared me."
Thats some of the reasons i wrote this and i've seen others.
I see nothing wrong with those comments, nor do I see the word "hate" in any of them. Most of them are expressing their opinion in silly manners, and one even pointed out that this was in that user's specific opinion.
So exactly where do you find fault with these comments?
EDIT: I suppose I should give an example of what I find an offensive or intolerant comment:
"The new Fanpop changes suck ***. Everyone who likes them is a loser who doesn't know what a good site is. I am so leaving this lame site right away if they don't change it back to how it was."
You said "one even pointed out that this was in that user's specific opinion." Well i know, what the hell has that got to do with anything?
Plus this is an opinion article and its my opinion!
Plus my article was not about users being offensive or intolerant...
Or are you just giving an example of what comments might offend and "suck?"
I did read your article.-- I will discuss more later, I have a bus to catch.
and i did kinda want to try it out...
but im still ill ♥
i hope i do too :P
and that crying one looks like its bleeding blueness from its head hehe ♥
umm...that's a contradiction to what you're doing in this article you know. These people dislike the changes, they are all for disliking them if they want to. I'm still unsure on it myself, does it make me a bad person to feel that way? Should i not be allowed to think "non positive" thoughts about the things happening? That to me is just silly to tell others to stop hating yet you think you respect their views at the same time.
EDIT: btw, I used a monkey because thats the closest thing to Obama in the emotes... ;)
As I began saying, I DID read your article. The basic premise of which is that people who do not like some changes to Fanpop and voice their opinions about it in a non-confrontational way are "moaning" (a word from your article) and are the reason that the website is not progressing (which is not true, as Fanpop grows on a daily basis).
I must say that you take several things for granted in your thesis. In order to presume that these people are thinking un-positively (again, your word), you must assume that these same users are the ones who dislike every other change Fanpop has made over the years (which I highly doubt). Also, you assume that these users have no reason for disliking this new comment system other than the fact that it is change, and therefore use a syllogism with no empiracal evidence to support it other than your own assumptions, i.e: "The users don't like the new comment system because it is changed. Therefore, the users don't like change."
What I'm saying is two-fold:
The first is that users have the right to voice their opinion, whatever that may be, so long as they do so in a polite, respectful manner, which these users have done. That is why I asked you what was wrong with the examples you gave. True, they express an opinion different from yours, and one that you believe to be overly negative, but they are not doing so in a rude way.
The second thing I'm saying is that change is not always good. If, for example, a public school decides to combine classes, or change the way the classroom is set up, thus doubling the population of the class, this certain change comes as a detriment to the individual student, who may not get the attention he would in a classroom half that size. This is change-- but it is not beneficial to the class.
Dissent is a wonderful thing. I encourage it and embrace it, because it allows us to think about our own opinions and to better understand others. That is all I'm saying.
i like the emotions...they are fun! :D
We walk a tightrope with any of the changes we make to the site and we try to put a lot of thought into each change we make. Whether or not it's always the right choice is harder to say.
Certainly we listen to the feedback that we get and try to work with that feedback where it makes sense to do so.
That being said, we bear no ill-will or animosity towards anyone who has a differing opinion. Love it or hate it, an opinion can often show that you care and have bothered to think about what works for you (and what you think works for the site!). I certainly appreciate Cinder's and Spotty's opinions (we just hope that some of the changes don't drive people away!). We don't take feedback like this personally. If the criticism is constructive, it's valuable. I'd certainly encourage it. It can only help make the site better which is what all of us want.
Obviously we also appreciate feedback from the other side of the equation too.
Regardless of the opinions on this specific issue -- we hope -- that on the balance of the *entire* site that we can please all of you.
I like your article, and all of these fun changes! I rated it a 5!
The emotes are cute, and the speech bubbles are awesome! I think it all looks neat!
w2w has used the word "hate' so that has come across as strong to some. I think if he had said "dislike" or "disapprove" it wouldn't have struck such a chord. I haven't taken this word literally at all in reading this article - it's not like w2w is stating that the users hate the changes with a violent passion. He's merely stating that some users are not for the changes. That's true.
Also at the very beginning of the article he says:
"this doesn't apply to all of you and I respect everyone's views."
Some users don't seem to have paid too much attention to that opening remark, they've just chosen to see the negative.
w2w is expressing HIS opinion, in a polite way, and he has every right to do so.
At first I was mostly nervous about the emote but I find the placement fitting and they don't bother me in the least (though I have yet to use them) and it's only the bubbles that draw my attention away from the point at hand (what can I say - bright shiny things draw my attention as well). I'm sure it's something I will adjust to but so far it's still odd to me. I'm on board with Cinders.
As for Cammie saying we needed more LOL on this thread, I give you this: Vitavitavegamin
I'm sure that will make you smile.
Note the first use of an emote. See, I'm all about adapting.
Lol everyone at these comments and thanks Shandiii and Cammie. People are taking the word hate to seriously, the whole article in fact, i was just trying to make people like change!
Now someone is probably going to find something wrong with the comment i've just left and moan about it lol.
Those you quoted earlier I'm sure have their reasons for not liking a specific change. One of them explained why she doesn't like the changes to the comments. As for the 'fanpop spirit' comment, I think that this person sees Fanpop as a 'fun website' so maybe that's why she thinks that a black background wouldn't suit the 'Fanpop spirit'.
It also seems to me that some people simply prefer the 'neat' look without the 'fancy stuff' - by that I mean a lot of graphics such as those large emoticons or the cartoon-ish speech bubbles. All the sparkly cutie flashy 'fun' stuff, you know?
But for my part, I like the recent changes!
