The guys and I thought it might be helpful to tap into the brilliant minds of our passionate community of users to make Fanpop a better place. Thank you all for all of your support so far, we really appreciate all the kind messages we've received and helpful feedback. Our goal is to make Fanpop the best place on the web to find content and community that you care about. I thought that maybe we could start a thread with ideas and suggestion on what you would like to see from Fanpop. I can't guarantee that we can implement all of them, but we always take our users suggestions very seriously. So feel free to post your thoughts here!
A number of people have suggested rating picks. Right now you can rate picks...but only as a moderator when reviewing picks that have been reported - they show up as links, and therefore you can rate them, since all links have ratings. But of course the ratings don't appear anywhere else. I'm not sure how I feel about rating picks - they are opinion polls, after all, and you can't really judge opinions - but you might want to either fix this (so ratings aren't available in this edge case) or just implement them for picks like everything else.
It wasn't so much that I mean to rate the answers or opinions more the question. Some of the picks that are asked are ridiculous and garbage. And some are really great. :)
How about where the little pic for the spot is displayed instead there is the lastest video from the spot playing (muted) or some sort of intro to the spot ending with the logo of the spot.
When I go to my profile, sometimes 'My Updates' are filled with videos and picks from only ONE spot, like Harry Potter, and this can get annoying when I have to go way down to the list to check if any other spots have been updated. I'd prefer it if instead of that long list thingy, it was just a list of 'My Recently Updated Spots' or something. That way, if I wanted to see my Smallville updates instead of Harry Potter, I could just click for a list of those.
OK, here's something I can't believe I didn't comment on before:
When you're in a spot and you list the fans, you have three choices for sort order: alphabetical by username, by number of contributions, and by popularity.
Now, who knows how the "popularity" is calculated (could be number of fans, could be an aggregate of ratings their content has received, et cetera), but I would expect that the number of contributions would sort just on the contributions to that spot, and right now it doesn't. It sorts by all contributions to fanpop. In a way, that's kind of interesting information if you were going to be competitive about posting more content than anybody else, but I don't think it belongs in each spot. My expectation, clicking a link to sort fans of a particular spot by the number of their contributions is that it would show me who has contributed the most to that spot...
I dunno if anyone has mentioned this before, but some spots have an awful lot of images, and its quite hard to look through them all easily. It would be really helpful if when you clicked to a view an image there was something that let you move to the next image or the previous image without having to go back to the main listing of the images, kind of like a slideshow type thing?
Something I completely missed, but is there any chance of the ability to do multiple choice picks? For example, in Final Fantasy VI, there are a lot of 'hidden' characters, if I wanted to make a pick about who people found the first time aound, then it'd be much easier to make a multiple choice for each hidden character than do seperate answers for every combination.
I love tinydancer's idea! It would be amazing if we could just click to the next picture without having to go all the way back. That just takes too much time especially if there are hundreds of images to look at.
Keep the ideas coming everyone! We're always reading this thread and it's super helpful for giving us ideas on things to do next. Thanks for being patient as the four of us are working really hard to incorporate a lot of your ideas but at the same time trying to make sure everything is running smoothly.
And you do a damn fine job too, Fanpop is never down, there's almost always a reply to our questions within a few hours and the constant new features keep us on our toes, thanks again guys :)
i totatly agree with tinydancer and caintil31.
Having an audio clip section on the spots would allow us to add music that doesn't have a video to it, i think it's a great idea.
By popular demand, "previous" and "next" links have been added to the image viewer. (It will flip through whatever image type you're currently looking at (e.g. wallpapers or icons) for that Spot.) Enjoy!
Hmmm...about the banner on the profile page - I wouldn't know what to do with a banner in addition to my picture. I have a hard enough time making banners for all of my spots!
I can see that it would be desirable to spruce up your profile for other people viewing it, but I use my profile far too much for myself (getting at my article drafts, seeing recent updates, quickly finding other users of whom I'm a fan) that I would begrudge all the lost space that a banner would take.
I still want to know how you can find out who started a spot. I know it's obvious when there is only one fan but after a lot of people join the spot, it's hard to tell. I know this might be irrelevant but I'm just interested.
