A Fanpop Challenge: Pending Spots

Well I always find abandoned spots that I add some or all of the content to. Sometimes spots that are not even pending are left somewhat empty. I found a few abandoned spots and worked on them. So far I did Abigail Breslin, Rachel Weisz and I just found A Walk to Remember.

Good job! Sometimes I suspect that newer fanpop fans don't join spots that don't have content -- so that's why I try to add. I know that I'm more attracted to filled spots as opposed to empty ones.

I check the pendings and newly made every time I log in. Hadn't thought to go waaay back though to look for abandoned spots. Thanks for the heads up.

Please only add content to spots that are of interest to you! With hundreds of spots, this shouldn't be hard, but please don't spam spots relating to subjects you don't care about with links and pictures just for the sake of having links and pictures.

I know that most of the more active users on the site have a multitude of interests, so there's a lot of spots to add to, but I just felt it needed to be said: don't post stuff if you're not a fan and think it's unlikely that you will become one.

Incidentally, spots get promoted only when the following happens:

1. There is a logo and a banner
2. There are a minimum number of fans (the number varies, however)

The amount of content doesn't enter into it, though I have yet to see a spot with no content promoted. So you could add:

3. There is at least 1 link or image in the spot.

See, I have to disagree. What's wrong with adding interesting links, pictures, or videos to a spot that I might not add to my mosiac list? I might not be a Fanpop fan of Fruit but I'll still want to share an interesting news article on a craze for Indian mangoes. I see no problem with that.

Oh my God Harold! Why do I feel like you're telling us what to add to? Trust me that I have brought a lot of spots up after I add images to them, it's like we're helping each other out. I totally disagree with you as well. Cressida is promoting that we help each other. We're free to add to any spot even if we are not a fan. I have done it plenty of times and have gotten nothing but props. Some people appreciate the images I add to the spots they start because if the spot is empty for awhile then I'll get an idea that maybe they can't find images or something so I like to help out. This is supposed to be like a community!

Harold, I strongly disagree with you. When I run across videos for example in the Pokemon spot. There were no episodes there so I became a fan (even though I no nothing about pokemon) and dedicated my time to posting the whole series for fans. Don't you think those fans are happy now that they can watch pokemon? Or what about the Bleach spot YOU are in. There were no videos in there when I ran across the series and I did you and the fans a favor by posting them. I think everyone should enjoy everyone contributions. Fanpop is a community for sharing contributions with fans. Not bickerin on who posts what where. Have a nice day. By the way great article Cressida!

I apologize that my earlier post was read as antagonistic. It wasn't meant to be.

I have to say that all the responses are giving examples of spots where you ARE interested in the topic or were likely to, so it doesn't feel like I made my point clearly. cressida, I didn't say that you had to be a fan of the spot - just expressed the sincere desire that people post to spots they're interested in!

Let me try again - and this is completely my opinion - my preference is to not post material to a spot for the sole sake of just having more links in the spot, like the spot somehow needs my charity. Spots don't need our charity! Spots are created by fans for other fans of a particular topic, and if they don't post a load of material to a spot, there's probably a good reason.

Please do look for spots that are of interest to you and add content, whether there's content there or not! Now, whenever I find something of interest online, I bring it to fanpop, and if it's in a spot for which I'm not a fan, great. But I don't look for spots that have little content as my sole criterion and pump it full of stuff for the sake of having more stuff. There's way too many spots that I'm interested in that don't have much content to do that, and I suspect that's the case with each of you, too. But that's just me, and I don't mean to suggest that others can't do differently.

Harold I know you're not talking about me! If I have more links/vidoes/images etc. than any body else and that bothers you so then YOU have the problem. We are not helping YOU we are helping FANPOP. If a spot needs content and I'm not a fan of that spot, I will post content because it is for everyone not just for YOU. So I feel like you are bitter against a particular person and you are generalizing it. Why don't You address whoever is making you feel this way or just tell Dave because I don't even see Dave stressing this at all. YOU seem to be the only one with a problem here and quite honestly it's getting quite out of hand. The reason I am posting this publicly and not directly in a message is because you are pointing fingers and not making any sense. I post content to help FANPOP, so if that gives me more link/videos/images than so be it, don't you think that this is helping the website grow? Think about that Harold, the more content the more there is for people to see!

Harold jealousy never solved anything. You are way TOO old to be acting like that. Grow up and stop critizing people for contributing to Fanpop. You seem to be the only person bothered by content being added. Don't you think you are a little silly and immature? And your speech makes no sense all you do is contradict yourself. I have never heard of a spot where no one wants content added. I am seriously laughing my head off as I say that out loud. How about I delete all the videos I have added and you can deal with the hate mail. For someone who doesn't need to add content to spots I get a lot of requests and props everyday. God, some people can be so silly no matter how old they get. LOL

I think there's some misunderstanding going on about how people are interpreting what Harold's saying. Harold's been on Fanpop a long time and the way Fanpop has grown over the last year has resulted in content to be added in a variety of different ways, many of which are drastically different than how we initially envisioned the growth of the site would occur. My feeling is that Harold set some rules down for himself early on (mainly because his interests are so varied that without rules the man would never sleep and be adding to Fanpop 23 hours a day - he needs some time to eat and kiss his babies good night!) that were in line with how we thought Fanpop would be focused. That's where the disconnect is - when Harold joined, we only had links - not even video embeds. (Videos were treated like links and would take you to the video site for viewing.) Part of the vision at that time was for each spot to really evolve into the best content on the web for that subject/fandom as submitted by fans and rated by fans. That way you know when you go to the Nikon Photography spot, it's content (links at that time) that other Nikon Photography fans think is great.

Now, Fanpop has grown and come to life and it's really out of the hands of the Fanpop team - we just shepherd and provide tools to you users. Each of you views Fanpop a little differently and together we all make it something greater than what it could be if we were working alone on it. It's awesome!

I know for a fact that Harold isn't jealous of other users - he, like the rest of you (kathiria82, megloveskyle, cressida, aliciane, benji, pkmntrainerj, and everyone else I see around), just wants to make Fanpop the best site on the internet. His ideas of how to accomplish that don't happen to be the same as kathiria82's (or maybe they do - he's just not phrasing it properly) and that's okay. Harold's not trying to be mean, he just had an ill-phrased comment that was taken badly (not the first time and probably not the last time - but it doesn't mean he's not well meaning). He's probably a bit bewildered by the "backlash" against his comments.

Anyway, I think everyone is entitled to their opinion. We can agree to disagree, but I think we can all keep it civil.

I can also vouch for Harold as a good person. I don't think he intended to offend anyone. His opinion does *not*, however, represent Fanpop's.

Personally, I appreciate all of your opinions. I realize there's a diversity of thought around how and why people contribute to fanpop. I'm not going to argue about the motives for adding content. At the end of the day, if fans like Harold, Kathiria, Megloveskyle, etc. are sharing great stuff (like they always do) and having fun, then all of us benefit.

None of you are doing anything wrong here. I just want to make that clear. Continue to add content as you see fit (just no porn please!). Fanpop is all about freedom. Freedom to share and freedom to do as you please (within the terms of service). You find something you want to contribute to? Go for it. You want to be the very best image uploader Kathiria, could I be talking about you Ms. Image Queen? ;-) ...go for it! A day without a batch of sweet new images from Kathiria is a sad day for me :-)

Yowza, what a way to spend our first day as a 1-year old! :( Cressida, thanks for writing this post and for all of you guys who are helping Fanpop out, we really appreciate all that you do for the site and if you weren't doing what you do, we'd be sitting here staring at a bunch of empty and broken spots. I think that was Cressida's point, it's sad to see a place that you love have broken windows and cobwebs everywhere. We know that folks like kathiria82, megloveskyle and cressida all mean well and want to paint the place all sorts of wonderful colors and make it welcoming for new folks who stop by. We love that you've made Fanpop your online home and we're always excited when you help build new additions to the house and decorate it with all the wonderful links, images, videos that you find to spruce things up. All of you mean well, and I know Harold does too, because he cares about Fanpop and wants the best for it too. So thank you to all of you who are adding great content anywhere on the site whether you're a true fan or just a fan of Fanpop. Now let's get back to the house party people. :)

We love all you peoples! People will have different opinions, and of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. We're here to share and have a great time!

I think it's safe to say that everyone who's commented here is a fantastic user and has done great (and unique) things to make this community grow. Everyone has their own way, so keep doing what you've been doing, and I wouldn't sweat it worry if someone's opinion is different from yours.

I think Cressida's idea (the one at the top of the page) is a great one. People have a right to disagree, of course, but if you don't like what you hear, please don't let it slow you down. If something really becomes a big problem (for example, no pron, please :D), one of the fanpop four will speak up.

It's our birthday! Please think happy thoughts :)

Holy smokes! A lot happened when I was asleep. I just wrote the article to remind fanpop fans of the pending spots area -- those fellow fans who visit the site every 1/2 hour just to stare at their updated wall, hoping for something new to read, watch, or pick -- and to inspire them to frequent the less-active sections of Fanpop. Personally it took me a few months before I realized that the pending 'pen' existed; now all I do is roam about, searching for interesting spots that are in a state of limbo. That's all. Sorry a heated discussion arose from it and if anyone is still a tad frustrated, watch this. It always makes me feel better.

I just read your article, and funnily, I was just checking out the pending spots yesterday. I agree with adding content to sites that interest me. There's nothing sadder than to see a spot with NO content, especially when there's so much out there. Thanks for the reminder.

As for the above debate, I really think Harold was just misunderstood. I enjoy all the contributions, especially to spots I'm a fan of, and to spots I've created. I get so excited to see even one new fan to a spot I've created and even more excited when they add content. I love to see something new in those spots...it makes it more fun and interesting for me. (And it let's me know I'm not alone in my more nerdy interests.)

I love pending spots! haha... most of the videos and images that I add goes to them. I love when I see that a spot I have been adding stuff to becomes an "actual spot"! Great article.
