A Guide to Fanpop's Got Talent
Concept Fanpop's Got Talent (FGT) is an annual talent competition. In this contest, Fanpop Users compete by submitting some material to the FGT spot that demonstrates some talent during a set submission period. After that period ends, the body of Fanpop Users then vote on their top choices, which are relayed to a panel of judges for the final decision. The winner gets kudos and a warm glowy feeling. Judging There are three judges for Fanpop's Got Talent. They are picked at random from a pool of nominees, with two alternates who will fill in for the judges if any are unable to fulfill their duties. The duties of a judge are essentially to tally votes and provide feedback to participants - they do not actually do any judging beyond each casting their own vote. Instead, they are more like moderators. For the first Fanpop's Got Talent (2008), there were 9 nominees. The judges are: * Saul_Mikoliunas * claire-aka-bob * amazondebs The first alternate is: * germany123 The second alternate is: * cowgirlfromhell Entering Each Fanpop User can submit one (1) entry per FGT competition. Entries must be posted to or linked to the FGT spot and titled as "<username>'s entry". Each entry must have keywords and a description. Each entry must also include the following in its keywords, at a minimum: * your username * the year of your submission (to sort between future competitions) * the talent(s) that are to be demonstrated * "fanpop's got talent" In addition, the following rules also apply to certain types of submissions: Videos: any entries submitted as videos must be between one (1) and five (5) minutes long. Images: images posted must include proper credits. Image entries may include up to five (5) images, but multiple images must all be of the same subject. Links: You may link to other content that demonstrates your talent (either on Fanpop or elsewhere), but you are encouraged to post or link to new content, rather than something that is "old" to the users and judges. Deadline All submissions must be posted to the spot during the submission period. For FGT 2008, the submission period started at 00:00 PT on 14 June 2008 and ran through 23:59 PT on 4 July 2008.
Voting As entries are submitted, users may rate and comment on the submissions as usual. This does not in any way relate to the actual voting for the competition. Voting begins immediately after the submission period ends, and lasts for one (1) week. An article listing all of the FGT entries will be posted shortly after the submission period closes, for easy reference. When voting, each user may cast two votes: his/her first choice and his/her second choice. In voting, users are encouraged to vote solely on the basis of the entry and the talent(s) the participant has specified. When judging the talent(s), users should also consider the five following criteria: 1) Showmanship 2) Effort 3) Difficulty 4) Entertainment value 5) Originality The votes are cast by sending a message with "FGT <year> voting" as the subject to the appropriate judge. Which judge you send your vote to depends on the first character of YOUR username, as follows: * If your username starts with any number or the letters A - H, then send your vote to amazondebs * If your username starts with any letter from I to Q, then send your vote to claire-aka-bob * If your username starts with any letter from R - Z, then send your vote to saul_mikoliunas If you send it with the wrong subject line or to the wrong judge, it may get lost in the shuffle, so vote carefully! Competition/determining a winner The judges tally the votes of the users and announce first, second and third place winners after the week-long period of voting is completed. Those winners get the acclaim of their peers and maybe some graphic embellishments (personalized icons, for instance) as prizes, as well as that warm glowy sensation. They are as follows: * the original forum thread, from the Fanpop spot * The original FGT forum thread * This forum thread on advertising (which contains a lot about voting) * germany123's article * this thread hashing out ideas for the competition * amazondebs' outlines of basic rules * claire-aka-bob's guide to voting * the forum thread calling for volunteers * The selection of judges for Fanpop's Got Talent 2008 Images are all from aholic
