This is a short character review of one of the best Firefly characters, the man they call Jayne!
When I first started watching Firefly, which wasn't too long ago, I fell in love with Jayne immediately. He was like a Firefly version of Spike to me. Kind of. Not only was he very, very, attractive, his character was appealing. He was the joking muscle. Big, tough, and intimidating, but absolutely hilarious. He had all the best lines, along with Wash. His relationships with the members of the crew were interesting, especially with the Tams. For a long time all he did was tease poor Simon and complain about River being a hassle. Overall, he was a very enjoyable character. My opinion soon changed however, in the 8th episode of the show, Ariel.
In this episode Jayne secretly makes a deal with the enemy, agreeing to hand over the Tams for a large portion of money. Jayne, being a money hog, of course would agree to this. When they first showed him secretly communicating with them, I immediately jumped up from the couch and started screaming "NOOOO!!!" My favorite character, BETRAYING Serenity? Betraying Mal, and the Tams? All his friends? I almost felt as if he had betrayed me!...

FIRST YEAR AT THE ACADEMY

River's time at the academy had started out normal. The 14-year old would go to her scheduled lessons and to her dance practice. Then six weeks into her one year stay. Her teachers said all of her lessons were being suspended. River was confused, her teachers explained that Dr. Mathias the academy's head doctor had picked her and a few select students to participate in a exclusive round of treatments. “To improve your intellect” was how Dr. Mathias explained the treatments. River was ecstatic when she had gotten the news. She was soon disappointed after learning she would have to give up her lessons and dancing. Before she started the treatments River was interviewed by the academy's lead psychiatrist, Dr. Lao she asked him in their interview “Is their no other option that will allow me to keep dancing?” Dr. Lao replied “I'm afraid their isn't, these treatments are going to take up all of your free time here. Think of the advantages through River if you completed these treatments all of your skills will be enhanced, your mind and body will be at extraordinary levels of brilliance, even higher than they are now. Isn't that why...

It was the day before River Tam's departure to the government sponsored school called the Academy, their slogan was: it is a haven for the gifted and extraordinary children of the Alliance. River could hardly contain her excitement. Her family was eating lunch outside on the patio that overlooked their flower garden Her parents were equally thrilled for her. Through they had heard nearly nothing about the school for it had just started around two years ago what they did know was that the school was extremely exclusive and had the most challenging educational programs. Before being enrolled in the Academy River went to the the Gen Ed school for the gifted children of Osiris. However when River heard about how challenging and advanced the Academy's programs were she immediately asked her parent's permission if she could be enrolled. Although Gen Ed had good programs River always felt that she was being educationally stifled in the school. After discussing it with her family River had made the decision to go. The only person who wasn't excited for her was Simon, her older brother. Ever since she could remember River had always been able to pick up on how other people were...
