i think he pretended to be mad to obviously fool Cluadius and everyone else including poor Ophelia, but i belive his anger got to the best of him and he got carried away. the only reason why i say that is because when he fights with Laertes in Ophelia's grave he confesses how he truly loved her, so it "seemed" as though he hated her. plus that the end with his epiphany and his death made him realize his mistakes, so with this realization i feel as though he truly wasn't mad but clever in seeming mad
