50 Years Of Horror

Cammie posted on Feb 26, 2008 at 02:13AM
Hammer House movies has celebrated 50 years of gruesome gothic horror masterpieces. From the mid '50s through to the '80s Hammer produced an array of classic horrors, thrillers and science fiction films.Although Hammer Film Productions was first established in the early 1930s, it was not until 1955 that it made its first horror (although it is more in the sci-fi genre) film with its production of the Quatermass Xperiment. This was also the first British film to be issued with an X certification.Quatermass was followed by several sequels. In May 1957 Hammer released The Curse of Frankenstein which won worldwide acclaim and made Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing household names. Although Hammer films were quite cheap to produce they nevertheless appeared lavish with their professionally designed sets and use of some of England's best actors.Amongst their horror classics are the Frankenstein, Dracula and Mummy movies which were so successful that they all had several sequels. Hammer also made sci-fi pieces such as One Million Years B.C. and some outstanding thrillers such as The Nanny (1965) and The Anniversary (1968) both which starred the legendary Bette Davis. Fifty years on and the Hammer House of Horror still has a worldwide cult following as their films remain timeless.
