Harry Potter vs. Twilight

I've been having many heated discussions with my friends Shalayna and Grace about Harry Potter vs. Twilight. Shalayna says,"You can't compare the two", and Grace says,"They're completely different." But it got me thinking: Why do so many Harry Potter and Twilight fans compare the two books? And is one really better than the other?

Ever since the start of literature, people have been comparing books. Maybe we're just naturally judgmental? The great Harry Potter vs. Twilight debate started, in my opinion, with The Chronicles of Narnia. When the Chronicles of Narnia came out it was possibly the greatest fantasy series of the time. After that Lord of the Rings came out which was also a fantasy series. These two books were most likely compared to each other. Then many years later, Harry Potter, another fantasy series, came out. People began comparing that to the Chronicles of Narnia AND the Lord of the Rings. Then Twilight comes out, also a fantasy series and people begin to compare it to Harry Potter. It's a constant cycle and pretty soon another fantasy series will come out and it will be compared to Twilight.

Another reason why people compare the two books is because they both got the same reaction. Both books are immensely popular and have fans in almost every country. Although Twilight is mostly aimed at girls, it still had a similar reaction with Harry Potter. In my opinion, Harry Potter got an even bigger reaction because the series is unisex in a way. Harry Potter fans vary in gender, race, and age. When I used to go to the book openings there would be 4 year olds, teenagers, parents, even grandparents. But if you went to a Twilight book opening it would be mostly girls in the 14-24 range and maybe the occasional boy.

Even after all the arguing between me and my friends, we all have to agree that each series is good in it's own way. I'll have to admit that Twilight has it's moments and there are some days when I would rather read about love instead of action-packed wizarding adventure. Although in my opinion, Twilight's fandom will never be as big as the Harry Potter fandom. With series like these the fandom is one of the most important parts. We stayed up till midnight to get our hands on the books. When Twilight came along, we showed them how to do a book opening right. We started bands and created a whole new genre. Some of our bands started Twirock bands to help them along the way. We created fansites. They created fansites. We made T-shirts. They made T-shirts. We wrote fanfiction. They wrote fanfiction. We've got documentaries and conventions. They're probably planning on doing those next. In the end, I think that Harry Potter laid the foundation for this type of book fandom. I guess we just have to step aside and let Twilight have it's moment in the spotlight. They can build on our foundation and step aside for the next fantasy series. I'm guessing that the next big thing will be werewolves.

I agree; people tend to compare popular fantasy literature whether it really has anything in common at all. Other than it's fantasy. I also agree that Harry Potter has a much great fanbase than Twilight. Just the variety of people who enjoy Harry Potter is greater. But Twilight is purposely aimed at a specific audience. Whereas HP was written to tell a story. A story that ended up appealing to a wide range of people. It just happened to be classified as "children's" literature because it was about children. But I think it transcends the genre though. Twilight will never transcend it's genre. It's a teenage romantic fantasy. Which is fine, as long as you like teenage romantic fantasies. :D

Twilight is the best but I like Harry Potter too.. but I like Twilight more because I can relate to the story better.

I think theyre being compared because they're both big hits! Theyre awsome books... And Twilight has more fans than Harry Potter even though its not 'unisex'. Stephenie Mayer didnt write the book just for girls and I know a lot of boys you think Twilight is better than Harry Potter. Im gonna start babbling so Ill shut up now.

i really like your article, not the same as others, you talk with bases that's cool. and Im a Harry Potter and Twilight fan, yeah, i like both, but they are totally completly different... and well, i like Twilight a lot but if we talk about the best book, i mean, the writers, J.K. Rowling is way better writer than Steph Meyer, we can not change that, even if i love sTeph's saga i do recognize who is better writer. well that's my opinion.

It's right that we cannot compare Harry Potter and Twilight. Both of them are really great books but in different criteria. In Twilight, it's obviously a teen love story between a typical 17 year old teen girl and a blood sucking handsome vampire and how they carry they're relationship. And in Harry Potter, well, there are many things in there. There's the story of friendship between the three, love, they're relationship as they grow up, betrayal, family, action, mystery and many more stuff you can think of.

The thing is, in every book, there's a story and we people are different from each other in many ways. And we have different tastes and likes in books.
I KNOW, I MENTIONED A LOT OF STUFF IN DESCRIBING HARRY POTTER AND I'M FANS OF BOTH CAUSE THEY'RE BOTH AMAZING BOOKS. REALLY GREAT ARTICLE TOO.

For me i am a Twilight fan and a Harry Potter one too. So i would choose both series. I choose the Harry Potter Series. There Awesome books to read. Twilight is a romantic story about Edward and Bella, and it's a teen romance. Girls say I love Edward while some love Jacob. Some say Harry is a awesome Wizard. Does not matter who is better. Next thing you know there going to compare Harry Potter with Wizard on waverly Place. They already said Harry Potter verses The Worst Witch. Go Edward, Jacob, and Harry!!!! I root for all three.

keep in mind while you read my opinion that i really enjoy both twilight and harry potter, and both are good pieces of literature. and for the people who say that either is a bad book, well theyre just being stubborn. but for me twilight is good, but not harry potter good. but thats just me. exactly as you said the books are different and it all depends on what you are looking for in a book. I enjoy the action and fantasy more(with the sprinkling of love!) while my friend is a romantic therefore twilight obviously appeals more to her. i guess if you are focusing strictly on the complexity and writing styles of the two, harry potter would win hands down, and a twilight fan who would disagree is really just kidding themselves. however like i said there is a variety of audiences in the world and each is looking for a different type of story so they really cant be compared. I really wish people would stop.

reading these i'm starting to think that the whole first article was lost to some people. you can't say 'yes i agree' and '____is the better one' together! but about the article, I beg to differ. you can easily compare the two by how meaningfull the story is. or how well it was paced or, since they ARE both fantasy, which was more creativ?. I personaly think hp is better in all of those. than twilight.

Twilight and HP are intentionally popular movies/books. My friends and I once came to the 6th graders building in our school. Believing to be, there were hearts on the wall written I <3 EC which my friend was guessing it meant I love Edward Cullen since the one who wrote it was her sisters BFF who was a seriously big fan of Twilight. It can be head-turning if people say that this movie/book is better than the other. As an opinion I like HP more which can somehow be quite disturbing to Twilight Fans when they hear that same thing over and over but we should learn to understand that Twilight and HP are just equals. Both are distinguishably amazing. It's very disappointing to hear "I like ____" or "_____ is way better than that!", though on the other hand it's very much of an opportunity for the fellow fans of that certain fantasy or any movie/book genre. Everyone must learn to understand that theres at least one hater for everything. Otherwise others must learn to accept the other and think twice once they learn that there are at least 5 things devastating about it.

theres no competiton. harry potter is the best, hands down people r wasting their time debating, i bet u half, no more than half of the twilight fans like twilight just because of the actors. i bet about half haven't evn read the book! thats y harry potter is the best, no competition. 99.9% of harry potter fans hav been fans b4 the movies & stuff. (1% being my daniel radcliff-obsessed friend) twilight is just a hype that people r jumping on, and it'll b gone by early 2010. basically

I personally love Twilight more. I hate it when people compare the two and make lies about twilight, to make their article/argument sound good I love the love and romancy stuff. Harry Potter i used to like...until i read twilight. it never caught my attention. anyway i agree. people shouldn't compare twilight w/ hp
though HP fans are overreactive when people love twiight more than hp. (such as roanne) this kind of stuff gets twilighters (such as me) mad and irratated and, roanne, do you have proof that summit cant afford the exenses of twilight?!!! (this is what i mean with the lying!)

H20rockzcleo, how in the world could you read Twilight if you couldn't even finish this article?

The only reason people compare HP and Twilight is because they've become so popular. And Renesemee717, I don't care if you're a Twilight fan or not, but you can't blame all that you said about the HP fans on the HP fans. Granted, if there's a fanbase about anything in the world, it has crazy immature fans that overreact. But in my opinion, the majority of HP aren't too bad. The stereotypical Twilight fan, however(dubbed 'Twihard'), are extremely immature and freak out if anyone says the slightest bad thing about their beloved series, and I'm sure they do the exact same things you say some HP fans do. In my opinion Twilight has the worst of the crazy immature fans and that the majority of the Twilight fans are Twihards. Don't believe me? Go to the Twilight spot and find someone who asks something that actually makes sense. Ex. "This part just isn't right to me..." Trying to bring some logic into the conversation? I would give you a link, I've been searching for 10 minutes for something like this. ALL of it has nothing to do with actually discussing the ins and outs of the books whatsoever. Or if it is, it's all the same exact stuff OVER AND OVER AND OVER again. So I apologize for that.

I don't care if people like Twilight, but people have been going way overboard with it and it's annoying me. I hate seeing Twilight stuff everywhere I turn because personally, I didn't and don't think Twilight is a good series at all. (If you want my reasons for that, here they are:http://www.fanpop.com/spots/harry-potteer-vs-twilight/f...nts Go ahead and start on page one :)). And that also shows how HP is quite a ways better than Twilight, and how JK Rowling is quite a ways better a writer than Stephenie Meyer.

Everyone has their own opinon; I'm simply expressing mine. I apologize for any offense taken by others. But if you simply don't like what I have to say, too bad. You can discuss it with me civilly, otherwise just please don't comment back. And the 'Twihard' thing is the Twilight fan stereotype; I know full well that not all Twilight fans are like this. I have several Twilight liking friends. But I'm saying the majority of the fanbase IS like this; Twilight almost seems brainwashing in a way, and no one actually thinks logically about it. They're just like "OMG EDWARDS HOT."

Comparing Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter makes sense. Each is a fantasy adventure book. It even make more sense to compare Harry Potter to Star Wars (Star Wars is fantasy and not Science Fiction). The problem is that Twilight is largely a romance novel which should be compared to other paranormal romances like Vampire Diaries and whatever else there is (In this particular genre I have only read Twilight so I don't know too much about this). The only thing they have in common is large fanbases but even then Twilight can't compete. They are completely different. If Twilight fans want to call themselves the 'new Harry Potter' or 'better than Harry Potter' then Harry Potter fans everywhere (including myself) will continue to defend ourselves until a Twilight fan produces an argument which DOES prove Twilight is at least worthy recognition.

I really don't know ... I agree with ToyletGnome; LOTR, ChON, and HP are comparable. (Although, I admit I got sick of ChON after three books). However, Twilight is more or less a romance novel than a fantasy one; paranormal romance. Not fantasy; it's a completely different genre. Twilight's target audience is teenage girls who enjoy reading semi-erotic novels to spice up their hormonal lives, and the vampyres just add that sense of fantasy. But, I'm sorry, in my opinion, Twilight's vamps aren't vampyres. They're ... eurgh, we've been through this before, but they are still sparkly. They sparkle in the sunlight as opposed to blowing up into dust. They don't have fangs. They don't die if you stake them. They integrate with humans. Instead of making us (as an audience) see a new kind of vampyre, SMeyer has just made them a lot ... sissier. On the other hand, before HP, we saw witches as knobbly women with a cackling laugh on broomsticks, but now, they're a completely different, but interesting and amazing, image.
Carlisle bit Edward; he decided that turning Edward into an immortal being would be better than letting him die. He bit a handsome seventeen-year-old, so he could be like him. A seventeen-year-old BOY. And the Cullen-Hale family repeat high school. Over and over again. Have they considered getting a life of some kind and just not go to school because they're already intelligent enough as it is? Or does the government keep tabs on them? See, there are just so many plot holes, I really don't know where to start ...
Whereas in Harry Potter, there is a fine line between the 'real world' and 'Harry's world', there is a magical government in itself, wizards usually hide themselves from Muggles, and let's not even get started on the depth of the story line. :)

Well, i personally think thank Harry Potter is way better. I think the plot is more interesting and there are 10000000000000 times more charaters and stuff happening.

I tried reading Twilight from a book borrowed from a library and it was boring boring boring. I would've fallen asleep reading it. To me, all that's a pewney bit interesting is when the car nearly crashed into Bella but Edward saved her.

I agree, I think the main reason people compare the two are not because they are similar in plot and stuff, but because they both rapidly gained popularity.
It's still pretty dumb to even attempt to compare Twilight to Harry Potter, because HP is a million times better.
