I wrote this article almost two years ago, after I'd seen the Dutch version of Jesus Christ Superstar. I found it while going through the archives of my LiveJournal and thought it might be interesting to post here. So keep in mind this is pre-Deathly Hallows.
I tried to explain how I saw the Harry/Ginny and Harry/Draco dynamics as neutral as possible, but me disliking H/G and shipping H/D HAS influenced this.

Of Jesus, Harry Potter and love triangles

It took me about ten minutes into the musical to be an adoring Jesus/Judas shipper, and when Maria came into the scene it instantly reminded me of a Ginny/Harry/Draco love triangle.

Let me tell you why...

Maria sings about looking up to, basically fangirling, Jesus. She thinks he's an extraordinary man, some sort of superhero, and she feels attracted to him right away. After a while she sees the normal man in him, and wonders how she can love the superhero and the normal man at the same time. She tries to soothe Jesus, she tries to be his biggest source of comfort. Familiar much?
Ginny has probably heard of the famous Harry Potter for years, and starts to wonder what he's like, like every fangirl. She meets him, and doesn't pay much attention to him, until she hears he's Harry Potter! All over sudden he's her superhero and she wants to see him again. In her first year at Hogwarts, he saves her in a fairytale setting, no wonder the girl has got such a complex. I think her adoration started to change at the moment Hermione told Ginny to just be herself around Harry. In book 5, they spend a little time as normal friends, Ginny is able to participate in the conversation, and learns a little bit of Harry as a person instead of Harry as a hero. In book 6, they hook up, and Ginny probably wonders how she should love him, since she can never participate in the most important aspects of his life - Voldemort, Horcruxes, saving people. She isn't strong enough to fight with him and Ron and Hermione, and she feels left out. I think she realises that Harry will not let her in on that part of his life, at least not anytime soon, and she tries to soothe him, be his biggest source of comfort, be the person with which Harry can escape the war for a little.

Jesus probably liked Maria's attention, not having to worry about all the problems of the world. He gives in to her, and rests against her while she calms him down. With Maria he doesn't have to be intense all the time, he doesn't have to be the miraculous Jesus, the one who will make the world a better place. But the problem is - Jesus has a mission, a duty, and he can't escape it. He can't escape his fight, and he probably knows that, still he seeks refuge in private time with Maria. He cares about her a lot, and he probably feels a little attracted to her, but I didn't see fireworks from his side. He really really wants to love her, but all he can do is like her. He excludes her from the most important parts of his life, like Judas' betrayal, the biggest part of the trials, but Maria keeps storming in at inappropriate times. She means well, but he wants her left out of this, since it will only cause her pain, and he has to die anyway.
Harry cares a lot about Ginny. She has been his sister figure for like six years. And he IS still a teenager, with raging hormones. Harry sometimes seems to have an old soul, with everything he's been through, and this oldness clashes with his newness in love and personal relationships. He tries to seek peace in his snogging sessions with Ginny, but he knows this can't last forever. He likes her, and feels attracted to her, but he didn't love her or care for her already, his feelings didn't grow gradually, their relationship is just a desperate struggle for something normal, for peace, combined with hormones. He knows he has a big chance of dying, and wants Ginny kept out of the battles, but she wants to fight for him, even though she isn't strong enough. Harry tries to turn away from her, and the only way he can do that is to realise it was lust and need for peace, not love, and he needs to break with her. Ginny expresses that it was Harry's determination to save the world that made her like him, just like Maria adored Jesus for being the man trying to save the world.

And in comes Judas, our favorite handsome apostel! Judas really loved Jesus, and he tried to get Jesus' attention. He was the one who kept challenging Jesus, kept bringing him back down to earth, instead of letting him believe that he really was a superstar. He didn't agree with Jesus' plans, Judas wanted the best for the world, but everyone misunderstood him. Judas kept "playing a role", like he says himself. He expresses that he fears of going down in history as a traitor, while he only wanted the best for Jesus. He and Jesus kept clashing, but they also couldn't keep away from each other. Everytime they were on stage together they alternated between fighting, snarling and hugging. Judas sings that Jesus scares him with his power. In the end, in a desperate decision, Judas betrays Jesus, because Judas was scared by the Romans, scared by Jesus and so Judas thought it was for the best.
Draco has been the one that has challenged Harry all these years. Every moment it seems like Harry was getting a big head, Draco was there to deflate it with a snarky comment. Draco doesn't agree with Harry's plans, but I think Draco must have thought about Voldemorts plans. I mean, you don't want Mudbloods out of the school just because you like to be evil? I think in his own twisted way, Draco thinks he is doing good. I think this because Draco is canonically proven to be one of the smartest characters. Draco keeps playing the role of the bully, while he actually wanted to be Harry's friend at first. Draco is going down in history as a traitor. Harry and Draco keep clashing, and they keep seeking each other out, to compete and to fight and to snarl. I think that Harry scares Draco - I mean, Harry looks a bit like a weak nerd, but he is this apparently very powerful wizard who has defied Voldemort and Death Eaters several times. In book 6 Draco betrays Harry and the rest of the school. Draco was scared of Voldemort, scared of Harry and didn't know what else to do.

In short, Jesus and Judas love each other, but is easier and more peaceful for Jesus to seek rest in Maria's arms.
Draco wanted to befriend Harry, but fell into the villain role, while Harry seeks easy snogging with Ginny.
Harry wants ease and comfort and someone to take away all of his problems, while what he really needs is someone to provide him a challenge, to make him think and to make him feel actual passion and life.

The ATTIC Theatre & Film Center will be performing Jesus Christ Superstar opening on Friday, March 21, 2008. I just saw a postcard for it and it says that it is playing Fridays and Saturdays and Sundays until Sunday, April 27th. Friday and Saturday night show times are 8 PM and Sunday matinees are at 2 PM. Tickets are 30 dollars at the door.

It appears to be an updated or modern version on the story with a lot of women playing major roles like Judas and Pilote. It is directed by Derek Livingston who has directed a lot of musicals around LA.

THe postcard says the Attic is located at 5429 W. Washington Blvd., in Los Angeles, 90016. The theatre is between Hauser and Fairfax Blvd, east of Culver City and just off the 10 freeway.

You can call 323-525-0600 x2# or go to www.attictheatre.org click on the online store to buy tickets to this amazing rock musical.

Thanks
