Harry and Ginny: WHY?!

This is the drawing on page 111 of Deathly Hallows.
When I first read the scene where Harry spontaneously kisses Ginny in the Gryffindor Common room (Rowling 533), I had to reread it about ten times to believe that that had actually happened. The whole scene just didn’t seem right to me and at the time I couldn’t figure out why. The more I thought about it though, the more I wondered, “Where in the world did this relationship even begin?”
Let’s start at the beginning of their relationship in the second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. It can be easily seen that Ginny, then only about eleven years old, has a very obvious crush on Harry. This crush just seemed to be a silly manifestation of her young self for she was only eleven. I remember laughing inside when reading scenes about her crush on Harry, especially the one where she sends a Cupid to sing him a very embarrassing song. At the end of this novel, I figured that her calf-like love for Harry would die down and that she would get a move on.
Interestingly enough, she had few appearances in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Then suddenly she starts making more prevalent appearances in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I wasn’t surprised by this considering how she did join Dumbledore’s Army which was the main focus of the book. She demonstrated great power, which I didn’t find odd and she was dating, namely Michael Corner. Harry didn’t seem envious over this or protective and Ginny really wasn’t showing much jealousy over Harry’s relationship with Cho. Ginny seemed to be progressing as a normal character who had already had her major role in the second book. I figured she would need no more attention really paid to her by the reader.
Then comes the sixth book, which throws everything out the window. Ginny’s now pretty, popular, and the object of many guys’ desires. She also seemed to be rude towards her family, which I found to be a terrible character trait. Then all of a sudden it comes out that she’s this amazing Quidditch player and managed to keep it a secret all of this time? Considering how large the Weasley family is, one would think that ONE of the brothers would’ve noticed her sneaking practices over all those years. Oh and did we mention how she starts dating Dean Thomas, who is a year above her? I really didn’t care much for this until that pivotal scene where Ron and Harry catch her making out with him in a stairwell. What I found so odd about this season is that all of a sudden Harry becomes jealous of this?! Whaaaat?! It just seemed really spontaneous with no build up and completely out of the blue. Oh and then this whole Ginny and Dean business isn’t mentioned much in the context of Harry liking Ginny for a few too many chapters for me. By the time I reached the chapter where the relationship is finally started, I had completely forgotten about the incident.
After that Quidditch game though where Ginny wins it for Gryffindor, they run to each other in the common room and kiss. *gag* That whole scene seemed extremely spontaneous and random for me that I reread the scene about ten times over just to make sure that it had happened. The only other scene I’ve read back over that many times just to make sure it was correct was Dumbledore’s death. Anyways, I loved the rest of the series, except for the Harry and Ginny scenes. Especially the one in Deathly Hallows where they basically make out for his birthday. Uhhhh no. Furthermore, with Harry and Ginny everything seemed too perfect.
For them, they didn’t really argue much or have many disagreements. The only disagreement that really comes to mind is when Harry says they need to break up for her safety in the sixth book. I don’t even know if that counts, considering how she went along with it, but Ginny didn’t seem happy with it. Other than that though, they seemed to have too perfect of a relationship.
Also, Ginny looks quite young compared to Harry Potter. This is easily seen in the films of course, but even in the books in the drawings she looks to be younger than she really is. Ginny almost looks child-like which thus to me makes this couple look creepy and out of place. If you don't believe me when I say that even in the book drawings the couple looks odd age-wise, then look on page 111 in the seventh book. Ginny looks like she could almost be Harry's daughter, at least in my opinion. *shudder*
Furthermore, the whole idea that they are pretty much a reincarnation of James and Lily really irked me too. Harry is very much like his father and Ginny is very much like Lily Potter in that she looks like her with her red hair and she is very passionate and stands up for what she believes in. It reminded me of this psychological idea called the Oedipus Complex in which young boys compete with their fathers for their mother’s affection to the point almost where they want all the mother’s love to themselves. Since Harry never knew his mother or father, maybe his decision to date and wed Ginny was skewed by this Oedipus Complex? It seems a little far fetched, but when I think about it it makes some sense to me.
Finally, the love potion theory. I don’t really believe this one though considering how it has to be given to the drinker every 24 hours and Ginny didn’t join them on the Horcrux hunt. It does seem perfectly logical to accuse Ginny of this action though. Maybe she created her own love potion that was so strong that it worked on Harry for life. It would explain why he spontaneously became jealous of her with Dean and why he spontaneously kissed her. Furthermore, in book six while in her brothers’ joke shop, she seemed pretty interested in some love potions they had. In this scene Fred shows Hermione and Ginny their love potions and states that they are the “best range of love potions [they’ll] find anywhere”. Ginny replies to this by raising “an eyebrow skeptically “ and asking “Do they work?” (Rowling 120). She seemed particularly interested in them. Then again though, I think this theory can be refuted since she did not come along on the Horcrux hunt.
Thus, I do not like Ginny and Harry together because it all happened too fast with little build up, it seemed unrealistic and too perfect, the fact that Ginny looked like Lily and Harry looked like James, and the highly unlikely love potion theory (it does make me laugh though). I do really wish Harry had just met someone else all together and dumped Ginny all together, but sadly that did not happen. Oh well, Rowling is still a literary genius to me and I will always love the Harry Potter series.

Wonderful soapbox! Hopefully now people will understand why we don't like H/G. Great use of textual support.

"After that Quidditch game though where Ginny wins it for Gryffindor, they run to each other in the common room and kiss. *gag*"
Yeah, I had the same reaction...

"Also, Ginny looks quite young compared to Harry Potter."
Thank you! I've always thought this was true. She always seemed so much younger than the trio, even if there was just a year's age difference.

Well, you definitely did a great job with this. Now that you've expanded our thoughts and given details, hopefully people can understand why we feel the way we do.

You raised a lot of great points, shieldmaiden. I never cared much for the Harry/Ginny relationship, so I didn't look too deeply into it - but now I see how twisted it really was. I especially found your point about the Oedipus Complex interesting - and it makes a lot of sense. The love potion thing also intrigues me...
Anyway, great soapbox. =)

Really great soapbox sheildmaiden! I do have a question though: If Harry didnt like Ginny why did he smell the flowery scent of her in his Amortentia Potion?

Great soapbox! I have always hated Harry/Ginny but it seemed like all of my friends thought they were an amazing couple, ugh.
I never really liked Ginny, and I agree with pretty much everything you've said. You also brought up some really great points with the Oedipus Complex, I had never thought of that before!
This is one of the best, well thought-out, well written soapbox I have read! :)
Why is it rated so low? Is it people who like H/G that rate it low? Because that's ridiculous...
