Original author, Douglas Adams
|
Attention all hitchhiker fans!! I am finally allowed to reveal it...
I can confirm there is to be yet another installment to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy trilogy!!!
....But how, you may be asking, as the original author, Douglas Adams died in 2001. No he is not that clever that he can write from beyond the grave, the book will be written by Eoin Colfer, the author of the Artemis Fowl series and more.
It is to be published by Penguin, instead of Pan MacMillan who have always published Adams' books before. The book is due to be released by the end of next year. It is also expected that all the previous books will be rereleased closer to the time of release, but they will be republished by Pan MacMillan.
Phew!! You wouldn't believe the self control it cost me keeping that in for over 2 weeks!! I have a feeling links and webpages will start popping up with this information soon, but you guys now know first!! And just in case anyone was wondering, I have inside sources which is the reason I know this.
I hope you appreciated this news, and spread the word!!

The original books

Not having read the Artemis Fowl books yet, I withhold judgment on this. But I will admit to a certain skepticism - it seems unlikely that the new book will be acceptable as part of the series. I say this for multiple reasons, based on a premise: either the book will attempt to recreate the tone of the original, or it will depart from it to some degree.
If Colfer writes to imitate Adams:
* even a given author can have difficulty recreating the tone and "feel" of a classic that he himself wrote years before, much less another author. People change over the years, and how they write changes in sync. So it's difficult to recapture the old style.
* even when authors are able to imitate another author's style, the very fact that the reader knows that it is a different author lends a critical eye to the prose, predisposing him to say "Well, that was good, but it wasn't like the original, was it?" Effectively, the author of the new material has to write something that embodies the spirit of the original author's work more than the original author ever did...and that's a tall order!
* this is made especially difficult when a particular book (or books) are so well-known that they've become effectively canonized. For the people who have studied the original text in depth, possibly having memorized portions thereof, an attempt to continue will seem like sacrilege. That's a tough hurdle.
If Colfer doesn't write to fully imitate Adams, then the hue and cry that will arise should be obvious.
The Artimis Fowl books have differences from the Hitchhicher's Guide to the Galaxy triolgy. Eoin Colfer has not published a grown up/adult book before but has had many successful children's and young adult books such as the Artimis Fowl series, The Supernaturalist and Benny and Omar, all of which I enjoyed. I can't wait to see how he writes for an adult audience.
