This is a real story and a real horse hero.
In Greenup county, Kentucky, Robert Denlinger has a farm down by the Tygarts River. He raises sheep, and works his land with Percheron draft horses instead of tractors. He has Kuvasz livestock guard dogs to help him on the right and when he has time, he gentles horses, especially wild horses.
His big Percheron mare Rosie had a filly named Phoebe. One day after a terrible storm, when the ground was muddy and slippery, Phoebe slipped and fell into the river. Rosie didn't hesitate -- she jumped over a ten foot bank into the river. It was so deep she had to swim, circling the struggling little Phoebe to keep her from being swept downstream. Rosie neighed and neighed for Robert to come and help. He came with friends and ropes, and swam out into the river to the two horses. Phoebe nudged his face and her mother's face, worried and asking them to help her. Robert calmed them down, and got a rope around little Phoebe. But she was so frightened, she pulled from the rope and Rosie and Robert had to follow her downstream to calm her again. Rosie kept her big body on the downstream side of the river to keep Phoebe and...

This is Lady.

One day, Shannon and Kayli came home from school and ran out through the barn to the corral to be with their two horses, Max, a quarter horse gelding, and Lady, a shetland pony mare. Shannon and Kayli's mother Lea came with them. As Lea came out of the barn, she saw a neighbor's dog just outside the corral, its head down and growling at her two girls. She ran over to them.
Suddenly, the dog darted under the fence and ran at the two girls, barking loudly. Max and Lady immediately started after the dog and chased it, as Shannon and Kayli and their mother stood together, frightened. Max chased it around and around the corral, but it wouldn't leave. It kept charging at the girls and their mother. Lady returned to them, keeping between them and where the dog was. She was guarding them, and every time the dog came near, she kicked at it.
Max kept on chasing the dog, and finally the dog gave up and ran back under the fence. But Max did not stop! He jumped over the corral fence and kept chasing the dog. He chased it all the way to the road, and only when it was gone from sight did he came back to the fence to be let back in. And all this time, Lady...

Horse, large land mammal notable for its speed, strength, and endurance. Horses are members of the Equidae family, which also includes zebras and asses. Like all equids, the horse is extremely well adapted to traveling long distances with great efficiency and to surviving on a diet of nutrient-poor, high-fiber grasses. The horse is an intensely social animal, forming strong associations with members of its herd and possessing a keen ability to recognize subtle social cues. These instinctive behaviors form the basis of the horse’s ability to bond with and obey a human trainer.
The horse’s influence on human history and civilization make it one of the most important domestic animals. Horses were domesticated in Eurasia around 6,000 years ago. Throughout much of human history, they have provided humans with mobility and have served in agriculture, warfare, and sport. Today domestic horses are found throughout the world. So-called wild horses, such as those found in the American West, are actually feral animals, free-living descendants of domestic horses that escaped or were turned loose.
