Kiwi Comes to Princeton
-Chapter 1-

I recalled the first time I strode down the bright walled corridors of my new workplace. I had dressed casually in tight black jeans and a matching muscle back singlet. My brown eyes had been outlined by dark make-up and my wavy, dirty blonde hair flowing down my back. I was only recently out of med school and I was a specialist in sports medicine and nutrition. I remember standing outside her office, nervous as hell, waiting for her to judge me. As I walked into her office, I held true to the statement ‘love at first sight’.
Doctor Cuddy was, is, in fact, a great doctor and as I sat in the differentials room of the diagnostic department, amongst other specialist doctors, I saw her stride up the corridor. Doctor House is my boss and is a complete asshole. When Doctor Cuddy, or anyone for that matter, walks into his office he will throw insults at them left, right and centre. I sympathise for her when she walks out, she looks hurt and I get urges to just rush out there and take her in my arm like a mother would her child.
“Doctor House, would you get down to the clinic?” Cuddy had asked.
From where I sat, it looked as though he glare at her. This move was quickly matched by Cuddy planting her hands on her hips. God she had great curves and how I would love to tell her, but she keeps warning House about employer/employee relationships and besides, I’m sure she doesn’t swing like me and she’s old enough to be my mother.
I had zoned out whilst they argued in his office but quickly came back when she stormed out of his office, her pride obviously hurt. My legs must’ve had a mind of their own as they quickly carried me down the hall after her.
“Doctor Cuddy!?” I called out. My mouth obviously had a mind of its own too.
She spun to look at me and gave me a warming smile.
“Doctor Tate,” she greeted. “Sorry I haven’t had a chance to catch up since you started here,”
“Its okay,” I told her.
“So, is there anything I can do for you today?” she asked as she caught me looking her up and down, completely zoned out.
“Oh yeah,” I said, frantically trying to think of something to say. “I, uh, just thought I’d remind you,”
“Okay then. When and where do you want to meet to do this?”
“How about tomorrow or Saturday?”
“On Friday I have meetings, but Saturday, yeah, sure,”
“How about lunch at that little café beside the beach, next to the pub?”
“Yeah, I know the place, I’ll see you there at eleven,”
Cuddy turned and headed back off down the hall. There was something that seemed to casual about that conversation and I intended to find out what it was.

As I sat down in the café that Saturday, I caught a glimpse of my boss as she walked in, in a light blue, floral patterned dress. Her bug eyed glasses covered half her beautiful face and a white, woven bag was slung down off her left shoulder. She pulled up a chair opposite me and pushed her glasses onto the top of her head, pulling her fringe out of her face.
“Doctor Cuddy,” I greeted with a smile.
“Please, call me Lisa,” she said, pulling out a manila folder from her bag followed by a pen.
“We’ll order coffee first?” I suggested. She nodded in response and I hailed the waitress.
“Just a flat white, trim milk, for me thanks,” she ordered.
“And the same but will full milk,” I said.
The waitress nodded and left us to our business.
Cuddy turned to me, handing me the pen and the folder. I scanned through its contents. It was my file. I circled, with the pen she handed me, the information that needed changing.
“So, what do you think of, working in diagnostics with Doctor House?”
“The cases are really interesting and challenging,” I replied honestly. “But, Doctor House is an absolute ass and is really cynical. Mind you, he does have a great mind for insignificant detail which comes in handy with our cases,”
“What about the other doctors?”
“They’re really great to work with but I’ve heard a lot about that Kutner guy, that was sad,”
Cuddy bowed her head and I figured it must’ve affected everyone in their own way.
“He was a great doctor, but what’s done is done,”
“Yeah, I guess so,” I agreed.
“So, do I call you Jessica, Jessie or Jess?”
I really did hate my names sometimes because all my friends had different names for me, but if she was willing to shorten it, I would let her.
“I prefer Jess,”
Cuddy smiled as I turned away and watch as the waitress brought us our coffee.
“So how are you finding New Jersey, I see you’re from overseas,”
“Yeah, I really like it here. I’m from New Zealand so it’s really different for me,”
“I can imagine,” she agreed. “So what made you choose Princeton Plainsboro?”
“I actually went to Singapore when you and Doctor House were there as part of med school; I thought you guys were interesting,”
“Really?”
“Yeah and then I read later about the flight with mass hysteria,”
“Oh god,”
“Did you get it?”
“Umm, yeah,” she said, embarrassed.
I tried containing my laugh, but it escaped in snickers and giggles. I smirked as I watched a smile kick her lips.
“Lunch?” I offered.
