To answer the question, I'd learn to write XHTML since you're starting fresh. It's almost identical to HTML 4 but a little more stringent in how your tags are supposed to be nested. Basically all XHTML will run on HTML but not vice versa - might as well learn the one with a few more rules (XHTML).
