Hello, fellow human rights enthusiasts! We're three months away from the winter solstice, which has long since been a time for loving, giving, and charity in several religions the world over. That's right, I'm talking about December! The month of Christmas, Hanukkah, Bodhi Day, Al Hijra, Kwanzaa, Zarathosht Diso, Ashura-- You know!

I strive to think of a religion that doesn't have a holiday in December. Hinduism doesn't have one this year, but soon enough, Diwali, the Festival of Lights, will be in December again, and then it will.

At any rate, humanitarians have a very important day in December as well-- December 10th, which is the International Human Rights Day. This year will mark the 61st anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations.

So what better month to celebrate the rights of our fellow human beings? December is a time for giving-- so let's give a part of ourselves to raising awareness for people who have had their rights suppressed or taken away completely.

This year, my main focus is involvement. Last year, it was a personal project, and I did the majority of it on my own because, frankly, I didn't have many ideas. Though I wanted to include others, I wasn't sure how, and I wasn't sure how many people would participate. As a result, all that we got was the HRAM 2008 Advent Calendar. Which is pretty awesome, but very long, especially if you didn't read it every day. I doubt anyone will read the whole thing now, and that's sad.

So I guess I have two goals for this year-- Involve more people, and keep the Advent Calendar briefer. I'm even considering doing a video calendar every day, counting down, with a new HR issue. I think that will be briefer, and more fun than reading a list of information and other stuff.

Also-- the Advent Calendar will NOT just be me. It'll be all of you, contributing your thoughts, links and issues. At least, that's what I hope. But we'll have more on that later.

This article is supposed to serve as a kind of "Home Base" for HRAM 2009. It will be the index of all other links related to HRAM 2009, so if you want to keep them close at hand, I'd suggest bookmarking this article, at least until January.

Yes, ineedcoffee, I think you were the only regular follower-- several, I'm sure, checked in from time to time during the month, but I think you're the only one (other than me) that was there every day.

Thanks so much, donabion. You're from Nigeria? I hope you'll participate, and talk about your country and what's happening there. If you're able, I don't know...

But thanks for speaking up here, I really appreciate it.
